It’s done, it’s over, call back the troops. E3 finally has a game worth noting.

That’s it. We’re done here.

But in all seriousness, we got to take our first look at the next Legend of Zelda game, Breath of The Wild. While this and Pokémon Sun & Moon were all Nintendo showed off during their E3 Treehouse stream, we managed to get to see a ton on Breath of The Wild in action.

It’s strange to think that we’ve finally come full circle. We will be getting an incredibly ‘modern’ Zelda game that looks to be staying true to the series’ roots. Even if it’s not exactly the game Zelda fans had hoped for or even necessarily want as Nintendo heads into their next console, it’s important to note that this is the natural progression of the series. We’re finally going full circle, almost every game claims to find inspiration from the Zelda series and now we’re seeing the series itself evolve to where modern games are at.

This first segment we saw gave us a pretty good look at Hyrule in the next game. While it may seem barren, quite a bit of content has been removed in order to keep these demonstrations as spoiler free as possible.

After out introduction to the game, we got to see some Treehouse staff let loose on the game and, wow, they weren’t kidding when they said you were free to go anywhere in the game. There’s a crazy amount of exploration possible which is almost terrifying. It was also later confirmed that it is possible for players to head directly to the game’s final boss at the start of the game without really engaging with the story. While this does sound like a silly thing to do, it feels like a testament to how well crafted the world of Breath of The Wild is if it’s possible to do that.

We, unfortunately, haven’t seen any of the game’s dungeons yet, but we were able to get a look at the Shrine of Trials that grant Link various abilities upon completion. These Trials seem to have some pretty interesting puzzles that require solving and grant the players runes that look to have a massive impact on the game’s world.

In addition to all this, we saw a literal ton more of the game. When Nintendo said their primary focus was their next Zelda title, they absolutely meant is and the only problem I have with this is that it’s so far away. While being able to see so much of the game we’ve been waiting for for so long is incredible, the wait for the game is going to be incredibly painful.

The best person to offer the worst opinion. Paul's interests include adding 100 hour JRPGs to his backlog and dark walks through dungeons. You'll probably find him rambling on about old man Nintendo or that crazy newfangled eSports thingy.
