The first title in Sony’s new range of PlayLink social gaming experiences, That’s You is an accessible social quiz that utilizes your phone or tablet and a PS4 to deliver a remarkable, if not very memorable gaming experience. I played it this weekend with some friends (it’s currently free for PS Plus members) and while we reveled in the quirky yet innovative mechanics, we felt it lacked the immediate replay value of other couch titles. The two hours we spent with it felt long compared to the three effortless hours playing Towerfall Ascension immediately after.

It was easy to set-up, with the app itself being quite small (nothing like a 2gb download to kill your gaming libido) and the delightful menu music (think Beatles’ I am the Walrus type vibes) set the tone for a series of questions and activities that often had us grinning as we tried to box in personalities to score points. Your PS4 can be set-up as a wifi hotspot so no worries if you don’t have wifi. The game operates similarly to Dixit in that you want some people to choose the same answer, but not everyone. You utilise your phone as a controller which is a refreshing change from syncing an arsenal of Dual Shock controllers (along with everyone’s log-in details). I loved that we didn’t need to create accounts for the new users. The game accommodates up to six players so goes down well with larger groups, just be warned that games last around 40 minutes or so it’s not very drop-in, drop-out. Also, avoid playing with anyone who receives a lot of phone calls.

Like 30 seconds, That’s You works best if you’re familiar with the other players. Familiar as in friends (not simply Facebook friends), so while it’s tempting to play in a party setting, it’s not as enjoyable if you’re jamming with strangers you’ve never met whose only commonality to you is their ownership of a smartphone and eagerness to eat your food.

The game boasts over 1000 questions and we tackled everything from ‘what would person A steal’ to ‘Who is most likely to practice pick-up lines in the mirror’. The doodling bits were not as fun and mostly seemed like a lot of effort. Fans of Draw Something would probably love it but my group wasn’t too high on it. The mobile only game ‘Pass it On’ is solely focused drawing, which means more MJ stickmen in the world.

The game ups the ante by introducing Joker tokens that double your score (provided you’re confident that the majority voted like you). I enjoyed this level of strategy and

a well-placed Joker was often the decider between first and second place.

That’s You bridges the gap between mobile and console, providing hours of accessible fun. It’s free for the next few months (if you have PS Plus) so there’s no excuse not to try it – unless you have zero friends.
