Before a week ago the last time I played a WRC title was back before the year 2000 was even in its teens.

That means the first time I played it was back in the days when PlayStation 1 was still the coolest thing you could own, and then I played it again when the PSP took over its spot.

Now I’ve always been a huge fan of racing games, even back when I played my first driving game (and that was when I was basically just out of the car-seat and into the passenger seat of my moms car).

The love affair I have with racing games is mainly due to me believing that I was born to be a pro race car driver, so anything that makes me feel like I’m living that life is more than welcome.

In retrospect, WRC was the game that was responsible for hogged the majority of my PSP gaming time, not only could I be a champion driver at home but now I could be amazing while driving around with my parents and walking through the shops as well.

Since those days though I’ve never really picked it up again. I just never seemed to have crossed paths with it, not so much by choice but just by lack of it ever showing up on my radar again and also an influx of similar styled games.

Back when I first played it there wasn’t exactly a lot of competition, we took what we got.

But then this year, WRC 6 came out and it was literally EVERYWHERE so I thought it was time to get back into the driver’s seat and see how it handles.

When it comes to racing games we live in a world which has Need for Speed and Dirt Rally in it (my two personal favorites). So for me, WRC 6 really has to give me something special if it wants to stand on its own.

One of those special things it gave me ? Split Screen Multiplayer. You guys remember that really cool thing that all racing games used to come with by default before companies decided to kill our childhoods? Yes? Well WRC 6 has it.

WRC 6 embraced the fact that racing games are best enjoyed sitting on the couch next to your (now ex) friend or partner and playing against each other.

And it also brings enough other, single or multiplayer content to the table to make for a surprisingly enjoyable experience.

Boasting an amusing career mode, some rather fun and challenging courses (even a few rather technical ones). It also has a really easy to grasp driving system, which makes for a really great sit and play game.

Now if you look purely at content, the game as it stands now does fall shy of other games in its genre. It has a rather tiny collection of cars in its library by comparison, and visually you don’t really get all that much variety. But I also didn’t mind all that much, instead of giving me a bunch of cars that are the same ride just with a different mask – WRC 6 gave me a smaller choice pool but one where I felt each car was truly different when racing.

Another thing they worked on was the detail to damage on your car, while not the best damage detail I’ve ever seen and while it might seem like an irrelevant thing, it is still really visually impressive and it’s this detail that makes the game just feel that much more real.

Then you have the courses themselves, most are designed in a way that makes you really feel and experience the high speeds that you can reach with intensity, and how they get this right was by creating a very small obstacle free space for your car to navigate through. This sense of ‘narrowness’ makes every turn feel that much more dangerous and fast.

Career mode is okay, amusing but nothing groundbreaking. It’s fine to waste some time in, and it helps to break up the monotony of just going into the same races repeatedly, although the game does give you courses across 14 different countries to choose from which also helps the game feel different each race.

I wouldn’t say that this game is made for the guys who want a very realistic and professional racing/driving experience, WRC 6 seems to cater for more the casual thrill seeking audience who just want to sit down with a friend and have a good time.

Now do I think that its worth the R 965.00 price tag? Not really no. Personally, I don't think any racing game is, but do I think it's worth picking up when it goes on sale? definitely.
