Originally a novel written by Peter Craig, Blood Father is a fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping action movie. With Mel Gibson.

Blood Father delivers everything that I look for and want out of my action movies, it’s loud, violent, rough, has just the right amount of raw emotion and it’s one hell of a lot of fun.

The movie follows Link (Mel Gibson) who is an ex-con and ex-alcoholic as he reunites with his 17-year old daughter Lydia (Erin Moriarty), who’s been missing. All of a sudden he is forced straight back into the life he has been trying to leave behind in order to protect his little girl from drug dealers hell bent on killing her.

All in all, It feels a whole lot like Taken, just without Liam Neeson slowing it down. You can call this movie many things, but boring is not one of them.

The movie tries to separate itself from the typical cliches of ‘dad will do anything to protect his little girl’ movies past and oddly enough, it actually succeeds. It’s really enjoyable watching a father daughter action movie where their relationship isn’t perfect and loving, where its angry and unforgiving at times, where his daughter isn’t a princess and instead is as rough around the edges as he is and isn’t afraid to show it.

There is an awareness in this movie that goes beyond what you see on screen, we get to see Mel Gibson back to doing what he does best, taking command of a movie. The movie wouldn’t be the same with anyone other than him in it, and he knows it. As comebacks go, Blood Father is right up there with the greats.

Yes, this movie won’t be winning any Oscars, and yes it has the typical plot holes and shallowness that as to be expected from a movie of this genre, but at the end of the day its good entertainment and a fun ride, and that’s all that it’s supposed to be.

Second Opinion Darryl Linington When I walked into the cinema to watch Blood Father, I expected a glass half empty approach; however, what I got was a glass filled with non-stop action and brutal violence, which came with a side of smart one-liners. Blood Father is a great action flick… Not only does the film have a great cast, but it has an adrenaline filled story line that will keep you at the edge of your seat for its entire duration.
