“DEAD OR ALIVE… YOU’RE COMING WITH ME” – Robocop (1987)

Ah nostalgia…

For the most part, nostalgia is an untrustworthy demon that takes the mundanity of the past, tidies it up a little before selling it to us for more than it is worth.

However once in a while, nostalgia gifts you with an experience that makes you remember why “the good old days” were the best ever.

The 1:4 Scale Robocop Statue by Pop Culture Shock Collectibles (PCSC) is a prime example of the latter scenario.

I swear this statue took me all the way back to my misspent youth to incidents of waiting for my folks to go to bed before I could sneak into the lounge to watch Robocop- my parents were a bit iffy about age restrictions and who could forget how gory the 1987 movie was?

It made me reminisce, about the days of TUBE on SABC 2 with Cody, Dub and Froy and watching the Robocop television series on a Monday afternoon- in addition to flashbacks I had of the sound thrashing I got from my Ma when I was caught watching the movie in the first place.

Be honest- the theme song is playing in your head right now and you are involuntarily twirling whatever you are holding just like Robocop did with his gun.

I am getting ahead of myself… Let’s try that again…

In 2014, PCSC announced that they had secured the license to develop a Robocop product and the geekoverse lost its collective marbles in anticipation of what was expected to be another surreal collector’s piece. If memory serves, the announcement came shortly after the 2014 Robocop remake (which did surprisingly well in theatres) so everyone was pining for more Robocop merchandise.

As everyone knows, PCSC abides by only the absolute highest of standards and the product was delayed up until very, very recently.

Two years of anticipation!

That’s like a lifetime in the collectibles world! I swear, there are entire love stories between lovers that go from courting, to engaged, to married and divorced in less than the time it took PCSC to complete this project!

Yes, I am suggesting that PCSC puts more time and effort into creating its products than people put into their lives – but I digress.

If Phil Collins is to be believed, and you really “Can’t hurry love” then this love child of a masterpiece by PCSC (with support from Big Shot Toy Shop) is proof for the maxim that patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait. While I can wax lyrical about the philosophical journey this piece set me on… I think everyone would rather I get to the crux …

The review that follows is based on the standard version of this statue which was produced in a limited run of 600 units in total.

AESTHETICS

The statue comes in well-reinforced packaging, and there is some minor assembly required.

When complete, this polystone statue stands at roughly 22.5” (ie circa 57.71cm) including the base and is cast in the 1:4 Scale.

While very solid, I would suggest that one exercises caution when removing the individual pieces from the box and assembling the statue. The size and weight of the statue make it a little difficult to work with.

Don’t despair, though, all the stress, strain and “two drops pee” moments you will have while assembling the statue are completely worthwhile once you behold the final product.

The head, base and arms are separate pieces which all snap into place relatively easily and are for the most part held in place by very strong magnets.

Robocop’s calf-pistons are also separate pieces that clip into place quite easily.

Where this statue really stands out though is the phenomenal level of detail in the actual sculpt. Every grove, seam and plate throughout Robocop’s (err I’m going to call it) armour has been painstakingly reproduced.

The statue boasts an impressive paint job and the painted metallic sheen across the statue with its subtle highlights is executed in such a manner that you would be forgiven for harbouring the mistaken belief that this statue is actually cast in metal.

The precise attention to detail that PCSC is noted for is brought into sharp focus when one considers the sculpting and paint work on the face sculpt which bears and eerily uncanny resemblance to Peter Weller himself. The fine texturing and colour blending result in an almost lifelike visage for the character – no mean feat when you consider that the statue is cast almost entirely out of polystone.

The statue comes packaged with a stylised base which is embossed with the Omni –Consumer Products (OCP) logo from the Robocop franchise. The base is solid and well balanced.

For purposes of completeness, I digress to mention that the exclusive version includes some light up features and extra hand attachments to present the statue in a few different poses.

That being said, nothing is lost in the standard version which sees Robocop rendered in his classic “dynamic aiming pose”.

The choice of pose in and of itself is another testament to the detail that PCSC puts into its manufacturing process because while Robocop is sculpted in a dynamic, heroic and action ready pose– he is not sculpted in a manner that takes away from the fact that he is by nature a prototype cyborg as envisaged in the 80’s -in other words, the pose reflects Robocop as the solid and firm law enforcement cyborg that we know and love.

In summary… Someone needs to edit the current Wikipedia entry for the word ”nostalgia” and upload a picture of this statue. It is an aesthetically appealing walk down memory lane.

AISH! – Factor

One does not simply “buy” this statue- this statue is a piece of art and one would have to “invest” in this piece. Everything about this statue screams elegance.

As highlighted elsewhere and above, this statue was released in a ridiculously limited run so make haste to get one before it is gone.

What we have here is a masterpiece tribute to the movie that ignited our passion for all things cyborg and ushered in a new era of sci-fi, action and drama.

This particular piece is in my humble opinion the quintessential representation of this genre changing character and is a must have for any Robocop fan.
