Attraction is not a choice – it’s magnetic
One of the many sad truths that exist in the world is the fact that the only exposure the average person has to the X-Men is Fox’s array of “Wolverine and Friends” movies that have been released since 2000.
Seriously over 100 unique characters over five decades and practically every movie has to do with Wolverine’s perspective on something or the other. Don’t get me wrong, Wolverine is definitely in my list of top fifteen characters ever but come one Fox catch a wake up – focus on other characters.
Take for example the sad tale that is the life and times of the Master of Magnetism: Magneto.
Here’s phenomenally powered being who has been hurt, betrayed and pretty much broken and in surviving all of that fosters a deep sense of hatred for the humans he holds responsible. In doing so he reveals himself to be the most “human” of characters. I mean seriously this character makes me vouch for the bad guy now and again.
In this particular iteration of the character, he has moved past his agenda of Mutant supremacy and is all about the dream of a peaceful existence between humans and mutants.
Irrespective of where in his long and storied history you come across the character, the saddest thing is the fact that despite being one of the most interestingly layered character in the entire X-Men franchise; the second you put a dude in magenta spandex, give him a purple bucket for a helmet and let him lead a team called “the brotherhood of evil mutants” you are going to lose a few rungs in the popularity ladder.
Thank the bastions of creative genius at the Marvel Bullpen who gave Magneto a serious overhaul in the Marvel Now! (or more accurately “Marvel 2012” because you know how the big two need to relaunch everything every couple years) universe.
Fortunately this “relaunch” (and I say it in this manner because the execs at the time insisted that they were not rebooting the universe like DC Comics was at the time , but rather changing tack and taking their characters in another direction) of the Marvel Universe brought some welcome changes, the least of which was Magnetos new duds as we see in today’s statue – the Kotobukiya Marvel Now! Magneto ArtFX+ statue.
This statue is readily available in most stores at the moment and was launched as part of the Marvel Now! X-Men line up.

Alrighty then, as always, we will consider Two A’s ie Aesthetics and Aish-Factor…
AESTHETICS
I must confessed that I was slightly underwhelmed by the costume re-designs of most of the X-Men in this line. However, Magneto proved to be the exception. At last I found a version of Magneto that did not look like a Fizzer (you know the giant pink glucose strip sweet?) and showcased this character in a svelte black uniform with grey/ white/ silver highlights. It’s difficult to tell what colours exactly because the paint applications almost seem to catch the light differently as you move the figure around – a nice touch indeed.
The statue stands at approximately 20 cm and comes packaged with the standard Kotobukiya Artfx+ magnetic base.
The statue depicts Magneto in a very dynamic pose with one arm outstretched and his cape swirling behind him. The face sculpt holds an expression that reveals his stoic determination with a quiet and menacing intensity – just what one would expect of Magneto.
While I like this sculpt, I personally favour a Magneto that pulsates rage and anger in his expression and I wouldn’t have minded an additional head sculpt or at least a means of swapping out the face sculpt.
I initially thought that perhaps including an additional head sculpt would push the price point out a little, but then I remembered that both the Marvel Now! Deadpool and Star Wars: The return of Anakin Skywalker ArtFX+ statues included a whole lot of accessories and I couldn’t help but feel slightly let down. I also wouldn’t have minded an alternate hand with some sort of attached “magnetic debris” to have a live action pose.
As it stands, this figure is a lovely display piece that will go very well with the rest of the team. However, I feel that if one were to opt to buy just this statue, a solo display would definitely look more appealing if the statue came with some “Magneto specific” accessories.
Anyway, all whining aside, and bringing our focus back to the statue itself; the statue boasts some very nice paint applications with some subtle dry brushing to simulate the shadows as they would fall on his skin which in turn adds to the aesthetic appeal of the figure.
Like most artFX+ statues there is some minor assembly required for this figure. Don’t worry though, there is absolutely no creative talent required as all the pieces just pop into place.
AISH! – Factor
As highlighted elsewhere, the ArtFX+ line offered by Kotobukiya is a nice entry level line of figures that balance between an affordable price point against the availability of aesthetically pleasing figures. While it is by no means their best version of the character, I like that Kotobukiya still managed to create a kick ass display piece in this price range.
I may not be the biggest Magneto fan in the world but even I can appreciate how this statue successfully captures an iconic character in one of the best costumes I have ever seen him in and manages to capture him in a commanding and compelling pose.
This statue is a worthwhile inclusion in any X-Men fans collection and is a good “jump on” point for anyone hoping to break into statue collecting.
