“Retail Therapy” -The practice of shopping in order to make oneself feel more cheerful.

For the life of me I can’t figure out why some people pretend like Retail Therapy is a bad thing.

Sure the “enlightened” would have you believe that materialism is an obstacle to Zen.

Well if you are so Zen why are you raining on my parade?

Yes yes, I am all for the progressive upliftment of the mind, body and soul – you know the whole “fight against commercialism and consumerism” thing.

At the same time I love stuff.

I love awesome stuff.

I love awesome stuff on sale.

Which brings us to my third favorite day of the year “BLACK FRIDAY!!!”

I was going to give you guys a run down of the etymology of the phrase Black Friday and make a thoughtful observation about the proliferation of the term here in the South African market. Hell I was even going to go off on a commentary of how we should thank the advent of globalisation as a marketing force for granting us this great day.

But I realised that we are here with a mission so I will just skip on ahead to the nitty gritty:

I present : “DarthZadyBun’s guide to Black Friday 2016 – where to go, and what to look out for”.

I hit up a couple of our chommies in the collector’s world to get an idea of what type of specials they were going to be running on the day.

It turns out that everyone is trying really hard to bring the best specials to their clients so we are all going to score all day in every way.

Some stores were still working out the kinks for their promotions at the time of writing, so be sure to check out their respective websites/ Facebook profiles and twitter feeds so you don’t miss out.

In the meanwhile, and in no particular order, here’s a short breakdown of the specials we do know of:

To start it off Shane and Karyn are feeling more than a little festive and will have the following specials running as of 9am tomorrow:

– 50% off all Kotobukiya Statues;

– 40% off all DC Collectibles Statues;

-40% off all DC Collectibles Action Figures;

-40% off all Funko POP! Vinyl figures;

-40% off all Funko POP! Rides; and

-40% off all Marvel Select figures.

Yes, thats right; you have a chance to get Kotos at half price and a chance to fill up those X-mas stockings (and display cases) at next to nothing. Then you have the whole weekend to work out how to display your goodies – Looks to be a pretty fly day to me!

Oh, there will also be selected items marked down in store, so be sure to make a turn to the store and keep an eye out for the Black Friday Sales Tags on selected items.

Out-of-towners don’t have to feel excluded as e-mail, call and Facebook messengers orders will be accepted. Please note that it is bound to be a busy day so be patient and make sure your order has been received and processed to avoid disappointment.

Friends of the site, Reza and his partner in crime “the Nas” will be having a mega sale on selected items in stock.

Be sure to hit them up for unearthly discounts on premiere line items like Hot Toys and King Arts.

There will also be a massive bust up on prices on Kotobukiya, Marvel Select , Funko POP! vinyl figures , DC Collectibles and Neca.

Oh, something slightly out of the ordinary; I am also told that there is a special treat for those Hot Wheels collectors with some 1/64 scale entertainment cars being available as well – a little birdy told me that there will be quite a few fairly “rare to see” versions of these items on special.

For full details of all the specials and a live update as to stock availability, be sure to check out their website. You can place your orders via the online store on the day. They ship country wide so everyone gets to score!

Lastly, be sure to subscribe to the mailer list and follow the hashtags #ProjectMayhemSA and #BlackFridayDurban to keep yourself up to date with the specials.

Remember that stock is limited so don’t delay!

Joe and Co have decided to “ take this event…and give it to you…the people “. (Yes you know you read that in Tom Hardy’s Bane voice).

So to flip the script, according to the announcement on the Smallville Comics Alberton Facebook group, here’s how this is going to work:

“Whilst most retailers are discounting a certain percentage on their items on the day, we’ve decided to change it up a little!

We will be letting YOU, the customer tell us what you would like to pay 🙂 All reasonable offers will be accepted!

So pop in tomorrow, Friday 25th November and make the most of it.

Out of Towners can sms us (083 534 9301) or call us.

We’ll be posting photos up later tonight so you guys can see what we have in store.

This sale is (on) a FIRST COME FIRST SERVE(D) BASIS.

Payment is required tomorrow.

This sale EXCLUDES the following:

*Call orders

*Anything being kept aside already

* Hot Toys

*Stock that arrived yesterday (23 November 2016) ”

Well there you have it. This as novel an approach as it is.

Guys, a humble request from everyone here at the Geek Node; please resist the urge to be a douche and offer fair value on items.

Be sure to subscribe to their Facebook page to keep abreast of developments.

Critters and Comics have also joined the revolution with their “Blackest Friday” special running through their online store.

All you have to do is buy any two items advertised on their website and get a third of the same type (of equal or lower value) for free! Yes, that’s right, indulge you inner completionist…

This special is valid on all in-stock items priced up to R 3000 on Friday, 25 November 2016.

The special runs from 8 am – 8 pm.

As an illustrative example, here’s how it will work in practice according to their Facebook announcement:

“For example select any 2 Funko Pops; add to your cart and go through the order process. Then indicate in the comment section of your order the item you want for free.

Note that it has to be the same type of item so if your order is for Pops the free item has to also be a Pop ”

Oh, just as an aside, this particular special does NOT count towards the “Critters bucks” for the Critters and Comics Holiday special.

John Lee and friends are having a special running on Comics and selected T-Shirts. Be sure to visit them in store to catch these epic deals.

You know that girl/guy you have been eyeing and wanted to indulge their geek gear request – well now you have a chance. Resist the urge to go “samesies” – that is not always smooth, this isn’t an episode of Gossip Girl.

Just to give you an idea of the scale of the sale, comics are going discounted at 25% off and selected t-shirts will be sold at up to 50% off the marked price.

———————————

So there you have it, lots and lots of lucks out there for the grabbing.

This is not intended to be a closed list of deals available. Be sure to check in with your favourite retailers as to what they may be offering on the day.

l was told that I should probably dispense some advice about being responsible and being sure to set aside some cash for your groceries etc. Well all I have to say is “ { Insert Applicable Lecture Here}”.

Remember, Black Friday is one of the few days that the consumer gets to indulge himself. Pretend its your birthday and get yourself something pretty.

Be sure to share this post and give us the heads-up on any specials you come across.

Oh, and be sure to send us pics of your hauls!

Happy shopping!
