“I bet it feels huge in this hand…”
– Deadpool 2016
Verily these will be known as “the days of the geek”.
If Spielberg proves to be correct and the comic book movie industry goes the way of the westerns and becomes obsolete, you and I will look back misty eyed, quaky kneed and spastic bladdered upon these days and fondly remember what it was like when Super Hero movies made the world turn.
Aside from giving me something to do with my free time, Super Hero Movies have also brought many new fans into the fold of comic book fans. Note, I say, “Superhero Movies”, because the truth is that the comic book world is filled with more than men and women clad in brightly coloured spandex and the nature of contemporary audiences is that they aren’t necessarily ready for everything that is out there.
Yes, there’s a long way to go before everyone taps into the awesomeness of the hobby, but it is reassuring to note that some movies are helping people do just that.
Case in point was this year’s Valentine’s extravaganza – the release of the Deadpool Movie featuring Ryan Reynolds.
Crass, rude, crude and lewd Deadpool was finally given a chance to break on to the scene and into the annals (the most important “N” in the English language there) of popular culture.
As can be expected there was a merchandising boom to capitalise on that. I will be reviewing some of my new Deadpool acquisitions in the weeks to come. However, for today I would like to take a walk down memory lane and review the Kotobukiya ArtFX+ Deadpool Statue.
Having been released in March 2015, while stocks are somewhat limited, this statue (and its variants) are still available in most stores at the moment. Try to avoid second hand scalpers aka the Zama Zama Miner 49er collectors

Moving Along…
Now, we are going to deviate from our usual two part formula for statues where we consider Two A’s (ie Aesthetics and Aish-Factor) and add on “Accessories” for good measure.
AESTHETICS
“You may be wondering why the red suit? Well that’s so bad guys can’t see me bleed. This guy’s got the right idea. He wore the brown pants”
This line in the movie cemented my faith that we would receive an unabashed and comic-accurate version of the character in the cinematic universe (cough cough brooding snap a neck Superman anyone?). Based on his costume design from the Marvel Now! Comic series, this statue depicts a sleek and svelte version of the character with a clean design. The paintwork is clean with almost zero bleeding and slop incidents and the sculpt itself depicts Deadpool’s whimsical nature.
This statue is sculpted in a very deep action pose and would appear smaller than other statues in the Kotobukiya line – however the statue is still in scale and will fit in nicely with the rest of your collection. I like that the statue is “built low” (No- that is not a reference to the fact that there is this stereotype that all Indian men like their cars to have a dropped suspension you savage!) because it allows the statue to occupy a spot front and centre in your display shelf with other characters displayed behind it.
The statue stands at approximately 15 cm tall and comes packaged with a stylised magnetic base which is a departure from the standard “black square” Kotobukiya Artfx+ magnetic base.
Despite the fact that Deadpool’s head is covered with a complete head-sock mask, the sculptors managed to capture some of his personality in the sculpt. I like what they did with the face sculpt here but Kotobukiya released a few more versions of the statue as limited edition variants, one of which had the unmasked “chimichanga” face head and accessories. Bloody money grabbing monsters – releasing a whole new statue to give us an extra head sculpt. Let’s be honest, they could have included hit in this package if they really wanted to. Sigh.
The accessories (and we are gonna discuss these in more detail below) are very nicely done which many tiny details included in the scuplt. In fact, you might even be mistaken into thinking that the various pouches across the figure have some utilitarian purpose. Unfortunately these are merely adornments. I regret that Kotobukiya seems to have dropped the ball slightly here as the pouches could have benefited from some light dry brushing which would not doubt have made those portions stand out just a bit more. Not a major train smash bt anything means.
Well I don’t want to get “a-head” (Hahahaaa – oh come on that was funny!), but as it stands, this figure is a kick ass display piece that a Deadpool fan should spring for.

Alrighty then, let’s talk about Accessories.
ACCESSORIES
This is actually what Deadpool looks like…sometimes.
Now while I don’t ordinarily like to talk about accessories with statues, I really like what Kotobukiya was able to pull off here. The statue comes with a few small accessories which are very easily swapped out that each showcase the different facets of Deadpool’s character.
-The “Thumbs out” hand accessory showcases Deadpool’s larger than life antics.
-The Katana and “holding hand” accessories showcase is fighting prowess and killer instinct.
-The included signboard (and white board marker) allow you to showcase Deadpool’s sense of whimsy.
The same rings true for the dagger which is sculpted as part of the boot.
I’ve said it before but I love getting free things and this statue knocks it out of the park. I realise that that assertion may sound contradictory given my lament about the inclusion extra head above. Allow me to clarify – I would have liked a free extra head. However the fact that one was not included does not take away from the statue itself.
In summary, do I feel like Kotobukiya hoodwinked us a little by releasing another version of the statue with a different head – Yes.
Do I feel like the failure to include said extra head detracts from the current figure? Hella No!
It goes without saying that there is a fair amount of assembly involved in this statue. However, this is characteristic of Kotobukiya artFX + statues and there is absolutely no creative talent required as all the pieces just pop into place.
AISH! – FACTOR
I cannot emphasise this enough, but the ArtFX+ line from Kotobukiya is an excellent entry level line for would-be statue collectors as it balances between an affordable price point against the availability of aesthetically pleasing figures.
Deadpool has always been one of the more interesting characters out there and finding an affordable statue that successfully captures this multi-faceted character is truly something.
It looks good in any display and its accessories guarantee for numerous display options which is unique in and of itself for a statue.
Damn right it gets a Shoop Shoop Aish!

Deadpool has always been one of the more interesting characters out there and finding an affordable statue that successfully captures the essence of this multi-faceted character is no easy feat. This statue looks good in any display and its accessories guarantee for numerous display options which is unique in and of itself for a statue. Damn right it gets a Shoop Shoop thumbs up. Get yourself one.
