“Oh, come on, Puddin! Don’t you wanna rev up your ‘Harley’? Vroom vroom!” – Harley Quinn

I have spent a fair amount of time preaching the virtues of DC Collectible’s Batman Black and White line of Statues.

I focus mainly on Batman, Joker and Harley Quinn figures in that line. Seems that they are the most readily available.

I was elated when DC Collectibles announced the “Harley Quinn Red Black & White” line of collectible statues. The line is intended to showcase some of the clown queen of crime’s most iconic looks and we will be seeing everything from the Arkham Asylum version of the character all the way through to her classic Batman the Animated Series version of the character.

With so many epic versions of the character to choose from I was concerned when the first release in the line was based on the current comics version of the character (which to my mind isn’t the best art style for the character – a bit too “bubble gum and bubbles” for my taste).

Then my faith was rewarded when they released preview images of today’s topic for discussion, the Bombshell Red, Black and White Harley Quinn statue.

Yes, this has been an emotional rollercoaster for me indeed.

A quick shout out to Shane and Karyn from cosmic comics who gave me a phenomenal deal on this statue.

As always in the case of a statue, we will consider our two cardinal A’s ie Aesthetics and Aish-Factor…

AESTHETICS

A little history here, the DC Comics Bombshells franchise began as long ago as 2011 when DC Collectibles found artist Ant Lucia’s prints re-imaging the DC super heroines as pin-up girls. The concept was novel enough that Ant Lucia, was commissioned to create artwork that became the basis of the highly popular DC Bombshells line of statues. Drawing heavy influence from Pin Up models and World War II aesthetics he blended these classic designs with the so-called “rockabilly culture” of today.

The idea was (and remains) so popular, that they ultimately created a comic universe about it.

Now, as can be expected Harley Quinn was one of the more popular figures in that line of statues. The fact that this Bombshell version of the character is one of the first versions of the character they chose to release is a testament to the popularity of the storyline.

The statue stands at roughly 7.8” (ie circa 21cm) which is just perfect for my displays.

As always we have a very attractive Harley.

Despite the tri-chromatic theme, Harley is showcased as the mischievous, seductive menace we know and love.

The paint applications are brilliant here. I was quite happy that the bulk of the figure is black and white with just some areas highlighted or accented with red. This adds an element of gravitas to the statue.

The application of a myriad of black, white and grey hues across the figure add nice texture to the figure and save it from looking “flat”. At the same time, it is not so textured that it loses the bright “glam-gal” look that the statue is supposed to have (being a Bombshells statue).

This is a cold-cast porcelain piece so you need to be very careful with the way you handle it. I found that he pose has it lilting slightly to the left and I was worried that the centre of gravity might be off and it would easily tip over.

I realised afterwards that as long as you have the included base set on a secure surface you shouldn’t have too much of a problem and the pose itself seeks to add an extra tilt to her hips and accentuate what is intended to be a very seductive pose.

The base is the only accessory included and the other sculpted details reflect those of Harley’s usual bag of tricks such as the pop-gun.

I can’t over emphasise how brilliantly the fine sculpted details are done!

The statue boasts wonderful sculpted details across the figure and in particular on the belt, its buckle and the various pouches.

Add on the sculpting of the hair, shoe laces and the jacket this together with the fine paint detailing on smaller details like the joker card on her jacket and I am quite content to tell you that this statue is “the bomb”

No, I will not apologise for such a horrible pun.

AISH! – Factor

As we saw with the Black and White line of statues, this line seems to represent fair value for money for a cold cast porcelain figure.

Bear in mind that as this is a Harley Quinn statue, the price is bound to be slightly higher (because everyone will want to buy it).

The statues are part of a numbered run and these first edition statues are bound to gain value as time goes by. It is unclear at this stage whether the line will end off having second edition releases as well. Though given that this is Harley Quinn merchandise I am sure we will see that.

I can find no fault with this piece and it elicits a resounding “AAAAIIIIISSSSHHHH!!!” for balancing between the masterful execution, fine sculpting and value for money.

Another lovely piece by DC collectibles. Captures everything we loved about the Bombshells Harley Quinn. Definitely worth picking up.
