I apologise in advance for all the accidental puns that follow.
If we remember nothing else from the 90’s, we need to make a point of remembering the theme songs from all the epic cartoons.
The Spider-Man animated series theme song is one of these timeless classics with its electro-punk rock overtures. As if that wasn’t enough, who could forget the opening sequence with what passed for 3D back in those days.
Say what you like about that cartoon, but that was where I developed my love for the web-slinger.
For one thing, the cartoon was able to touch on the core aspects that made the character resonate with so many of us.
I mean here was a guy with all these awesome powers but was such a hard luck case. Missing dates, struggling with exams and being perpetually broke.
Like most collectors, I have consistently tried to capture some of my misspent youth by building a collection of figures that harken back to the good old days. Alas, in the case of Spider-Man, decent collectibles have been in horribly short supply.
Sadly most Spider-Man collectors merchandise seems to fall on the higher end side of the collectibles fence.
Honestly, for ages it seemed as though if you weren’t going to grab a Sideshow version of the character, you would have to settle on the million Ultimate Spider-Man TV series figures, which frankly don’t do the character justice. Okay sure, there were a few cool Marvel Select ones in the midst of all of that, but those are still action figures. I am talking about getting a proper, decent statue version but without the sticky price tag.
Well, at last things have swung around the corner and we now have the first entry in a new collectible line by Kotobukiya; the ArtFX+ Marvel Now! Spider-Man.
New, improved, knee friendly super hero landing
Before I go on, a quick shout out to friends of the site Reza and “the Nas” from Project Mayhem Collectibles who sold me this figure on a decent payment plan.
Okay, so down to business.
I will showcase this piece by addressing the cardinal A’s, namely Aesthetics and Aish-factor.
AESTHETICS
The figure showcases the web-slinger in a crouched pre-attack pose. The musculature on the figure is sculpted nicely and in such a manner that it brings to life the possibility of him being ready to leap into action, or that he is crouching halfway between and attack combo.
There is a lot of fine detailed sculpted throughout the statue the least of which is the webbing design of his costume. The web motif is executed across the figure evenly without looking cluttered or messy. I also liked that the designers had the web design seamlessly blend in with the joints on the figure.
The statue has a matt finish with some nice shading and dry brushing throughout the figure which adds to its detail.
The paint work is especially impressive due to the small fine sculpt work in the figure.
The figure includes two accessories. The disc-shaped magnetic base which is decorated int eh style of the Spidey signal – an approach that echoes the Marvel Now! Deadpool statue released a little while back.
I was so impressed with the way this based turned out. It is a departure from the black magnetic square bases Kotobukiya is famous for. An interesting quirk is that the embedded magnets in the feet of the statue are incredibly strong which allows you to actually mount the figure upside down!
Does whatever a Spider can!
I don’t care how much of a Spidey-basher you are, but that is all kinds of awesome right there!
Alas the base is not perfect as it seems to have an issue where it becomes scuffed easily. Don’t despair though, I have established that lightly rubbing the scuffing with some sunlight liquid removes the marks easily.
The figure also included a sort of stand or clip that fits onto the figure’s right leg. This piece is used to hold the figure in place if you opt to skip using the display base for the figure. I thought that this was an inspired touch and was impressed with the addition.
Still, while the included accessories are nice, my usual fuss with Kotobukiya comes to the fore. We are once again getting stiffed by the fact that Kototbukiya is not giving us enough accessories. When you compare this figure to the Batman BTAS ArtFX+ statue and the sheer number of accessories we got there, it’s hard not to feel a little let down.
At the very least we could have received an alternate hand with a web shooting out of it. Even better would have been a Peter Parker head, or a “spider-sense” head sculpt.
Once again though, in as much as I am complaining about that, I am reminded that this intended to be a statue and not an action figure so we shouldn’t be expecting any accessories at all.
Coming back to the sculpt itself, this statue is a little on the diminutive side (especially when compared to other crouched figures like the Beast and or Deadpool statues also from Kotobukiya in this line). The figure stands at just around 9 cm tall. While it works for the character, I would have preferred a slightly larger statue.
Nonetheless, the statue feels solid and well built as is expected from Kotobukiya.
AISH-FACTOR
I committed to buying this statue the moment the pre-order window was opened and I am very happy with it.
Admittedly there are a few things that worry me about the line now that I have seen this figure. For example, if the Peter Parker Spider-man is this small, I shudder to think about how small the forthcoming Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen statues would be in comparison.
Yes, some may argue that bigger is not always better, but it is a little concerning that with the general increase in the price of collecting at the moment we are getting statues and figures that are significantly smaller than we are used to.
Still, it is a well-designed, marvelously detailed and finely sculpted piece.
This is certainly a must have for a Spidey fan and is a welcome addition to my Kotobukiya collection.
Having seen what Kotobukiya is doing with these statues, I look forward to the other figures due to be released in the line and in particular the Venom and Agent Venom.
