Yes – It comes in red…
2008 was an awesome year…
We got GTA IV which set the tone for the modern video game era.
We got Heath ledger as the Joker who set the tone for a new breed of cinematic villain.
Alas the glory of those two things has waned over the years.
However, the one gift we got in 2008, which has proven to be the gift that keeps on giving is Robert Downey Jr. as the Invincible Iron Man.
It takes a certain talent to make what was once a B-list character the lynch pin upon which hangs the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In fact, the Iron Man franchise is so big there are (at last count) 46 different figures in the Hot Toys stable alone.
We have seen everything from the standard gold & red Iron Man suits all the way through to some more… Interesting colour schemes such as the Disco armour.
It would be near impossible to identify one single armour as the best armour; but today’s item in focus would definitely rank in the top 5 to date.
Firstly a shout out to friends of the site Dean Fourie and his lovely wife Ayesha for letting me have a go at fooling around with this Marvel masterpiece.
There’s a lot to talk about with this figure so we are going to look at the following categories Aesthetics, Accessories, Articulation, and the Aish factor.
Alrighty then, lets go!
AESTHETICS
This figure showcases the Mark 45 armour which is the final armour we see in the Avengers Age of Ultron (AOU) movie.
The design is sleek and is 100% movie accurate. Of course what else would you expect of Hot Toys?
The figure is one of the Hot Toys signature Die Cast series and features a superbly sculpted armoured body. There is significantly more detail than we have seen in previous releases (including my Hot Toys Mark 43) and has various metallic silver, gold and red accents painted across. While even a plastic body would gleam with the paints chosen, I am convinced that the die cast construction adds a subtle metallic lustre that makes the paint really pop .
Add in the LED light-up Arc Reactor (and other light up features) together with the weather-worn/ battle damaged effects and Bam! We have what will likely go down as one of the best Iron Man armours ever.
While the figure itself is very compelling, its value as a display piece is bolstered significantly by the included diorama base which incorporates a 1/6 scale detachable Ultron Prime Sentry bust. Well its not really a bust in the display piece sense, but the bust of a damaged Ultron Prime Sentry.
Not to pre-empt my discussion about accessories too much, but the included “battle damaged” chest piece is brilliantly done – call me a sadist, but I tend to prefer battle damaged versions of the characters.
I am a classic style man so I was happy that this version of the armour had more red than we saw in previous releases such as the Mark 42 (brilliant figure, horrible colour scheme). As a personal preference I tend to prefer versions of the Armour with a bit more yellow scattered across (See the Mark 43, Mark 7 and Mark 3 figures all by Hot Toys). That being said, this figure is truly sexy, and a compelling argument for by Hot Toys is one of the leading brands on the market at the moment.
ACCESSORIES
I recently turned my attention to kit-bashing, and was heartbroken to see how ridiculously expensive custom accessories are for 1/6 scale figrures. As a result, now more than ever I am delighted when I see figures with packages that are choc-ful of accessories!
This figure comes included with:
One interchangeable battle damaged chest armor plate.
One (1) pair of forearm laser weapons (they plug into hidden laser blasters in the guantlets).
Plastic thruster effects pieces for boot thrusters.
Four (4) pairs of interchangeable palms as highlighted in the picture.
The Ultron Prime Sentry display piece.
A specially made display (and weighted) base.
A standard Hot toys display post.
A dynamic flight stand.
The accessories are all fully interchangeable, allowing you to achieve a completely customised look for your figure.
I am particularly impressed by the inclusion of two display stands. This allows you more posing options.
I should mention that there are a series of battery operated LED features throughout the figure which shine very brightly.
Without a doubt one of the more impressive figures in terms of accessory selections and inclusions.
ARTICULATION
I have discussed the applications of the hot toys true type body in the past. I believe that the body sculpts on these armored figures are specially developed and as such have other articulated features above and beyond that of the standard figures.
As a result, its probably wise to take the time to read the included instructions manual. In addition to the standard and expected points of articulation, there are additional points of articulation in the waist, shoulder, arms, hip, legs and feet which allow the figure to bend a little more to achieve additional poses.
Having said that, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news; but you are not likely to be able to achieve a movie accurate “superhero landing pose”.
You will come close. Sadly just not close enough. However, don’t despair, the figure has plenty other dynamic pose applications.
Despite it’s weighted components, the joints hold up pretty well. However, it is probably wise to shift poses once in a while just to be on the safe side.
AISH-Factor
Beautifully sculpted, exquisitely executed and another true testament to the artistic brilliance of the good folks at Hot Toys. This figure is a true gem.
Sadly due to the materials of its construction and the various accessories included it is a slightly more expensive figure.
Hot Toys are also a higher end collectible so supplies are very limited.
So in conclusion, if you can find one of these and can afford to break the bank a little for this bad boy, then you should not hesitate to do so.
In conclusion, as is the case with all the Hot Toys figures have seen to date, this figure warrants stark raving AISH!
