Okay so straight up and in the interests of full disclosure I am going to freely admit to not being too clued up with the mythos surrounding Wonder Girl.

Yes, I know that she is Donna Troy and she is from the Wonder Woman franchise, but more than that, she is a complete mystery to me.

What I found to be more mysterious was that we were given a Bishoujo statue that is a major departure from what we have come to expect from our Bishoujos.

I mean seriously – is it possible that she may be sculpted as being too conservative? Before I miscast myself as a savage I just want to put that thought on the back burner for a moment.

Just a very quick shout out to our friends Cosmic Comics who let me have a look at this figure. Be sure to hit them up for this and many other products in store from Kotobukiya and other manufacturers.

Anyway, on to the business of the day. This being a statue; we will consider the 2 A’s, Aesthetics and Aish-Factor.

AESTHETICS

By way of recap, the Bishoujo line is a line of products by Kotobukiya rendering figures in the 1/7 Scale. The name translates to “beautiful girl”. As a result, the characters are usually showcased in revealing costumes and sultry/ come-hither poses.

Like the Edward Scissorhands statue I reviewed here , this particular sculpt is a slight departure from the usual Bishoujo fare.

While boasting strikingly beautiful features, the statue has a modest body sculpt and an even more modest costume.

I must say, I am impressed by the approach as it suggests that a character can be showcased as having a classic beauty to it, without being overly sexualised.

Despite having a modest look overall Kotobukiya managed to cram some great detail into the statue with some finely sculpted details.

The paint job on the statue is also spot on with the simulated denim pants being masterfully executed. This figure is a great testament to the skill of the Kotobukiya artists. This is evidenced by the subtle dry brushing and shadowing across the figure adding great depth and a sense of haunting realism to the statue.

I liked the design choice with the lasso pose. It gives her a sort of “cow girl” look which is a nice touch. She seems to exude innocence but tempered with raw power – which from my research into the character seems to be pretty much on point.

In the interests of fairness, I must confess that I was a little underwhelmed by the base. Bearing in mind that this is a pretty basic statue, I would have preferred a more interesting base to add some extra “sing” to the figure.

AISH- FACTOR

This statue is a welcome addition to the growing Teen Titans roster I the Bishoujo line.

I was initially apprehensive about the fact that this appeared to be a statue of some random girl with a rope. At first glance, there didn’t seem to be anything specifically characterising her as super heroine.

I would definitely have scored this a lot higher if I was a fan of the character and the overall product was a bit more dynamic.

Still, the design choices do not detract from the fact that this a very well made and good looking statue.

Without putting too fine a point on it, this statue is not an overly sexualised version of a character. Yet it still manages to showcase a sense of strength and sexiness in the character herself. This is no mean feat bearing in mind the competition in the market.

If striking that balance in the dichotomy doesn’t elicit an AISH from you, I don’t know what will.
