Carnage is an example of what happens when you create a brilliant villain that everyone loves so much that he becomes an anti-hero. You are forced to create a meaner and more twisted version of that character to dole out all the villain awesomeness you had planned. Carnage is the dark avatar of everything that is horrible about Venom and is a merciless, deranged homicidal maniac.
The Marvel Select Carnage action figure manages to capture that sense of deranged evil nicely.
A quick shout out to Reza and “the Nas” from Project Mayhem for hooking me up and making this review possible.
This fan favourite figure was recently re-issued so you should find them fairly easily at most stores.
As with all action figures, we will consider the three A’s (ie Aesthetics; Articulation; and AISH-Factor).
AESTHETICS & ACCESSORIES:
As the accessory choices in this figure affect the Aesthetic appeal of the figure, I have grouped these two factors together.
Quick digression here; I have previously discussed the market trends with action figures and the problems they pose.
With most stores hedging their bets with higher prices due to the exchange rate doing the twerk it’s been doing lately, figures are slightly more expensive these days. The real question is whether it is worth splashing out on.
Well, in the case of this particular figure, Diamond Select delivered! This figure is THE Carnage action figure to get.
The figure includes with three different head sculpts depicting:
- Classic Carnage,
- Kletus Cassidy Transformation head, and
- Ultimate Carnage head.
As if that wasn’t enough, Carnage includes two interchangeable arms (a scythe and spear arm), five tendril-like attachments and four web line-like tendrils. These can be attached to various ports on Carnage’s body.
The figure itself figure stands a little over 23cm tall and boasts a phenomenal sculpt. This seamlessly integrates any combination of the accessories to make the figure pop in any configuration.
The articulation is phenomenal and this in my view should be the base standard for any Spider-Man related action figure by Marvel Select.
The paintwork and texturing across the figure are generally well done. To be fair though, the nature of character design lends itself nicely to the acceptance of sloppy paintwork anyway.
Some folks argue that the figure is probably a little to big for this scale when compared with other figures in the line. While the figure is quite big, I personally don’t see that as an issue impacting the figure itself.
ARTICULATION
This figure is seriously the new gold standard for articulation in a Marvel select figure in my book. Marvel select figures are not renowned for their articulation – in fact, for a long time, a major criticism for most of the figures is the fact that their articulation is so limited that it might as well be a statue.
From the bottom up, the following points of articulation are present.
Ankles – hinge and rocker.
Knees – double pivot joint.
Thigh- swivel.
Hips – swivel hinge.
Waist – swivel.
Diaphragm – has hinge.
Wrist –swivel via peg.
Bicep – swivel.
Elbows – single jointed hinge.
Shoulders – ball joints.
Head/Neck – ball joint.
As you can see from the gallery below I was able to pull off some phenomenal poses.
The larger scale of the figure does not impede the articulation which is a major plus from me.
AISH! – factor
Carnage is a fan favourite and there are a quite a few product offerings. In fact one of our most anticipated releases is the Kotobukiya Carnage ArtFX+ figure due soon (pre-orders currently available from the stores listed above).
While there are other more expensive higher end versions of the character out there, this particular version in undoubtedly the BEST mid-range version of the character in action figure form.
Achieving the fine balance between entertaining play item, or display piece, this is something you need in your collection.
Given the very high Aesthetic appeal and the high playability (and this coming from a guy who doesn’t believe in playing with action figures) I would say that the figure elicits a resounding “AISH!” and is worth buying.
