“In brightest day, in blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might, Beware my power…Green Lantern’s light!”
As oaths go, that’s a pretty dramatic one.
With all the hype surrounding the release of the Justice League trailer a little while ago, as well as ongoing coverage relating to eh franchise, many fans have wondered what the future holds for green lantern.
A series of Instagram posts by Superman actor Henry Cavil (Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice) referring to his search for “Hal” made fans wonder if there is currently a search for a new Green Lantern after the much-maligned outing by Ryan Reynolds as the Green lantern a few years ago.
Speculation aside, it is a pity that the character has been sidelined for the most part.
As a result, it seems that there aren’t as many Green Lantern related items out there.
Against this background, the recently released Kotobukiya ArtFX Green Lantern statue is a welcome offering.
I was able to have a close-up look at the statue over the weekend at Durban’s Icon by the Sea” event. A shout out to friends of the site Reza and “the Nas” from Project Mayhem Collectibles who let me take this statue for a little while to evaluate it.

As always I will showcase this piece by addressing the cardinal A’s, namely Aesthetics and Aish-factor.
AESTHETICS
This 1/6 scale PVC statue showcases the Hal Jordan version of the Green lantern (“GL”) in a dramatic “determined to get dangerous” power pose. Sculpted to depict the unmistakable artwork of Jim Lee, this figure is a beaut.
I am usually reluctant to do direct comparisons between brands, though I have to say that while the statue is in Kotobukiya’s mid-range bracket, it is attractive enough to be displayed among other higher end renditions of the character.
I digress to mention that Kotobukiya took some flak for the design choice for the last figure in this line, the Kotobukiya ArtFX Flash. That particular statue had an underwhelming “just stopped running pose” that did not go down with most fans. It is great to see that Kotobukiya has upped the ante and has given us a well-posed statue.
The character boasts a fairly basic costume, though the details are well rendered. The musculature sculpting across the figure stays clear of the common chunkiness that sometimes plagues most figures. It is apparent that GL is strong, vibrant and battle ready with seeming overly cartoonish.
The face sculpt is well executed and GL sports a determined look. I liked this touch since he is most powerful when he exercises his indomitable will. This trait of the character is showcased nicely in this statue. Other finer details such as the hair and the power ring are given the same level of attention to detail.
The paintwork has a matt finish across the board with very limited shading and dry brushing across the statue. I found this curious as other statues in this line usually boast a lot more detailing. However, the pose allows the statue to catch light well enough which in turn results in the natural shadows giving the statue some nice suggested textures.
Sadly, it’s difficult to explain the effect in words, so suffice to s characters that the lack of more dry brushing does not detract from the look of the figure.
The statue includes a base in the shape of the character’s emblem. The emblem is sculpted from a translucent green plastic which is a nice simulation for the hard-light structures that are the character’s gimmick.
All in all, Kotobukiya did a great job by making this a simple, though comic accurate version of the character.
AISH-FACTOR
Beautifully sculpted with a clean design, I have no reservations with securing this statue. The build is solid and the PVC construction makes this a very hardy statue.
Some collectors may feel that the statue is a bit plain in terms of paint effects. However, this is a stylistic preference that would vary between collectors and does not detract from the appeal of the statue overall.
This statue is a worthwhile buy and warrants a solid “AISH!!!!” from me.
