With the amount of statues I buy made by DC Collectibles I really should start getting a kick back from them.
Though when you look at their products, it’s easy to see why one is always moved to drop serious cash on their wares.
Case in point – The DC Collectibles Joker and Harley Quinn Statue in the Style of Alex Ross statue we are looking at today.
First things first- Manners! A shout out to Shane and Karryn from Cosmic Comics for hooking me up with this hard to find first edition version of this statue.
As regular readers will know, I am loath to use the term “grail” to describe collectibles. However, this is one of the few times I am happy to drop that title.
A little bit of context, Alex Ross is one of the pre-eminent artists in comic books and his work is characterised by his photo realistic style. My first exposure to him was in a “Wizard” magazine I hijacked from a varsity friend all the way back in 2004. “Instant fan boy!” is how I would describe my reaction.
When I saw the artwork that inspired this statue, the prestige format one-shot book “Harley Quinn” released by DC Comics I knew I had to have it. Fast forward a few years, a couple work promotions and a payment plan later I finally have it and could not be more thrilled!
Just to put this out into the universe, I am still looking for a copy of the book itself, so if anyone has any leads, I will be grateful for the assist.

Ahem, anyway, back to the business of the day.
As always in the case of a statue, we will consider our two cardinal A’s ie Aesthetics and Aish-Factor…
A little later in the review, I will also do a side by side comparison between the first and second edition statues just to help put things in context.
AESTHETICS
Alrighty then, so this is a 1/6 scale cold cast porcelain statue which stands (including base) about 37 cm.
The statue comes in two parts, a ridiculously heavy (numbered in the case of the first edition) base and the two figure statue.
As always we have a very attractive Harley, being twirled by a menacing “Mistah-J”.
The paint applications are brilliant as expected. The lines are clean with no slop evident. Even with the finer details like the eyes and eyebrows we see deftly applicant work.
There is some very faint, and almost imperceptible shading in some areas which is a nice touch.
The pose itself seeks to suggest a swirling motion so while there is a slightly extra tilt to Harley’s hips, the Joker is quite stable so there aren’t any innate balancing issues I could see.
That being said, and as highlighted above, this is a cold-cast porcelain piece so you need to be very careful with the way you handle it. I was happy that my statue has pegs that slot in firmly into the peg holes so it is quite secure.
Though there have been instances where this was not the case, so you should be careful.
As long as you have the included base set on a secure surface you shouldn’t have too much of a problem.
The base is the only accessory included. Given the source artwork I don’t have anything to fuss about in this regard this time around.
I can’t over emphasise how brilliantly the fine sculpting details are!
The statue boasts wonderful sculpted details across the figure.
Its interesting how this statue is a 3D rendition of a 2D painting that looks like a 3D Photograph. If you apply your mind to it, that is some serious inception level mojo!
Bonus Feature – Second Edition Statue
The Second edition of this statue showcases the characters in the same pose. That said, the Joker in the more comic accurate Purple suit. I note that the orange shirt seems reminiscent of the Jack Nicholson 1989 Batman Movie version of the Joker. Another recent acquisition of mine helped me with that conclusion – so follow me to see that review coming soon.
Ahem, as I was saying.
In our chats, Shane of Cosmic Comics pointed out that the second edition statue is reminiscent of Jim Lee’s Art. It seems that he was likely referring to Jim Lee’s recent renditions of the Joker. You may recall that Lee’s earlier renditions were quite extreme in storylines such as Hush for example.
I’m not sure if I can see the resemblance to Jim Lee’s work myself as it looks like it’s Alex Ross through and through to me.
Feel free to sound off in the comments below with your views.
Either way, if you haven’t been able to score a first edition statue, then the second edition is an excellent substitute and does not lose any of the awesomeness we see in the first edition.
AISH! – Factor
Whether you grab the first or second edition, this is a fairly pricey statue and is aimed for more serious collectors.
However, if you are planning on making the jump up from entry or intermediate level pieces, this would be a good one to start with.
Being a Joker and Harley Quinn statue, the price on the first edition is bound to continue to escalate.
As highlighted above, there is a second issue release available, though I note that this too is in scarce supply. In other words get it now before you can’t.
For my part, I can find no fault with this piece and it elicits a resounding “AAAAIIIIISSSSHHHH!!!” for balancing between the masterful execution, fine sculpting and faithfulness to the source material.
