After George Lucas made it his mission in life to effectively ruin Star Wars for every hardcore Star Wars fan and then suddenly selling Star Wars to Disney. He’s come out as saying he got so much criticism because of the newer 3 films that he’ll never direct another Star Wars film again.
Lucas sold the rights to Star Wars to Disney in October 2012 for an estimated $4 Billion and has managed to stay the hell out of most new Star Wars stories. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair Lucas had this to say;
“You go to make a movie and all you do is get criticised, and people try to make decisions about what you’re going to do before you do it,” said Lucas. “And it’s not much fun. You can’t experiment. You have to do it a certain way. I don’t like that, I never did. I started out in experimental films and I want to go back to experimental films.”
George’s biggest fear is that Disney and J.J. Abrams will turn Star Wars into a bunch of ‘gobbledegook’ and also firmly stated that Jar-Jar Binks is his favourite character ever. This comes after Disney announced they plan to release a Star Wars film every year until the year 2020. That’s 5 new films in the next 5 years featuring not only mainstream Universe stories but also spin-off movies such as Han Solo’s film, the X-Wing focused Red Five and the rumoured Yoda film.
“My advice to anyone making a Star Wars movie is there’s more to it than just spaceships … I’m curious about what happened to Darth Vader’s grandkids.”
In case you don’t recall, Lucas gave us Jar-Jar with The Phantom Menace and the vote world wide shortly after, even for non Star Wars fans was that Jar-Jar is the worst thing to happen to a popular franchise since they replaced Mulder in the X-Files and thought nobody would notice.
