In the age where every 11 year old has intimate knowledge of your mother and where patches, online play and DLC reign king we tend to forget there was once a simpler time. A time when we all huddled around arcade machines in smokey places, clutching fists of coins. The time of Kong, Pac-Man and Super Mario and just like we have our champions today, such as the now retired Young Ho (yes that’s his real name) – we had a champion back then!
His name is Billy Mitchell and if you don’t know about him get off our internet!
Best known for his mullet and patriot ties and the fact that he can kick pretty much anyones ass in pretty much any retro game, Billy is a simple fellow that had much influence on our modern gaming culture today. His hairstyle may not have translated into today’s gaming scene but he’s definitely one of the reasons we have competitive gaming today.
His example forced many people off their asses and onto the gaming scene to challenge his records, if he could do it, why not you? Even today people are coming out of the woodwork to cross swords with the master.
Today he spends his work time running a chain of restaurants and in his spare time transforms into the ass kicking machine known as ‘The Mitchell’ – When in this transformed state of awesome, The Mitchell has a power level of over 9000 and gains the ability to resurrect any of the dead hero cards in your deck for his own personal army of awesome.
His most notable achievements include;
- First acknowledged highest overall score on Donkey Kong, with 886,900 in 1982.
- Believed to have been, together with friend Chris Ayra, first to reach the ultimate “split-screen” level 256 of Pac-Man in the summer of 1983.
- Moved the record score for Ms. Pac-Man to 703,560 in January 1985. Score not surpassed until 2001, by Chris Ayra.
- First person to achieve a perfect Pac-Man score of 3,333,360, achieved July 3, 1999 at Funspot Family Fun Center in New Hampshire. As of September 2010 (28 years after setting initial Donkey Kong record) this is the one championship Mitchell still holds, sharing it with 6 other players as of August 2015.
- Moved the record score for Donkey Kong Jr. to 957,300 in 2004.
- First acknowledged million-point score on Donkey Kong, with 1,050,200 in 2007.
- Moved the record score for BurgerTime to 7,881,050 in 1984. Score not surpassed until 2005.
- Became fifth (and last, as of 2015) person to achieve a score on Centipede, in marathon play, of over 10 million points, achieved July 8 1985.
- Recaptured the world records for both Donkey Kong (1,062,800 points) and Donkey Kong Jr. (1,270,900) on the weekend of July 24, 2010. As of 2015, both these records have been surpassed.
As a side note…I’m pretty sure the time hacking genius known as Hackerman from Kung Fury is based on Mitchell too…
