Small-town stoner Mike Howell (Jesse Eisenberg) spends most of his time getting high and writing a graphic novel. What Mike doesn’t know is that he was trained by the CIA to be a lethal killing machine. When the agency targets him for termination, his former handler activates his latent skills, turn ing the mild-mannered slacker into a deadly weapon. Now, the utterly surprised Mike must use his newfound abilities to save himself and his girlfriend from getting smoked.

What I Thought

This movie is good for half a laugh and to watch when you don’t feel like using your brain. Jesse Eisenberg is meagerly amusing at best alongside Kristen Stewart who manages to look like Grumpy Cat at the best of times even while attempting to portray some form of emotion besides looking like a mannequin with a gun.

You watch, hoping that the anarchic tone of the movie isn’t all it has to offer and end up being sorely disappointed mid-way through. Eisenberg & Stewart are the most amusing part of this film in the fact that someone actually thought it was a good idea to cast them together as leads. The violence, concept and utter stupidity of this film makes it very hard for anyone to take seriously and it’s more than understandable why this film did so poorly at the Box Office. In retrospective – We couldn’t really expect much from the guy who directed Project X anyway so this doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

The DVD features a Documentary, a Featurette, a Gag Reel and Audio Commentary with the director. If you’re part of the cult following then it’s worth a buy – otherwise avoid.

What other people thought

Eisenberg and Stewart stay appealing to the last. The movie, not so much. – Peter Travers

A movie that could have gleefully gone over the edge, but lacks the confidence in its own premise to truly get as weird or as funky as the concept demands that it goes. – Sean O’Connell

American Ultra is not quite the sum of its eclectic parts, but is strangely entertaining, nonetheless. – Kofi Outlaw

A potential cult item in the making, American Ultra is an acquired taste but it is chocful of invention and the pairing of Eisenberg and Stewart, fast becoming a Tracy-Hepburn for Millennials – Ian Freer

Werner is a strange one...he quotes a lot of things...incoherently I might add, also he reviews stuff from time to time. We still don't truly understand what he is or where he came from.

To quote him verbatim:

Make sure they see my twitter handle so I can get hookers and drugs.
