A story of an imprisoned woman protecting her child from a violent man who abducted her seven years ago is the latest film from award winning film-maker Lenny Abrahamson. Releasing on 26 th February 2016, ‘Room’ is the heart-wrenching breakout drama starring Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay as ‘Ma’ and Jack.

Based on the Emma Donoghue novel of the same name, ‘Room’ takes the audience on an emotional journey about ‘Ma’ and Jack from ‘ Room ’ into the real world. ‘Ma’ whose real name is Joy, was abducted several years ago and has since been forcefully kept in a garden shed where she gave birth to her now five year-old son Jack. Not knowing anything else exists beyond the four walls, Jack only knows the room, heaven, space and TV.

Making the decision to finally break free of her captive, ‘Ma’ and Jack are catapulted into a whole new world, where Jack gets to experience the outside world for the first time. ‘Room’ explores the beautiful relationship between a mother and her son and how far one would go just to protect the people they love – ‘Room’ is a thought-provoking masterpiece.

• Brie Larson isolated herself for a month and followed a strict diet in order to get a sense of what ‘Ma’ and Jack were going through.

• ‘Old Nick,’ the name of the antagonist in this film, is another name for ‘the Devil’ in Christianity, dating back to the mid-17th century

• Emma Donoghue has said that this story is not based on any real-life case, although many believe this was inspired by the Josef Fritzl case
