Time for another movie spotlight! On today’s spotlight we’re taking a look at an obscure little gem from 2006 starring one of the more obscure people from the Happy Madison gang…
Way back in 2006 we got hits Casino Royale, Borat, The Departed, Silent Hill, The Illusionist, Flushed Away, The Hills Have Eyes and The Wicker Man and then we got literal crap like Over The Hedge and the legendary turd from Robin Williams himself – RV.
What we also got was an obscure little treasure from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison featuring the regular nepotism and casting of friends we’ve grown accustomed to over the years – Grandma’s Boy.
Unlike many Sandler films these days though, Grandma’s Boy comes from a time before Sandler just decided screw the audience or any actual story or production value and started videotaping himself going on holiday with his friends.
The story follows Alex (Allen Covert) and he’s a game tester for a game company called Brainasium. Their working on a game called Eternal Death Slayer 3, developed by former child prodigy, J.P. (Joel David Moore) and it’s due for deadline in a few weeks so the boss brings in Samantha (Linda Cardellini) to get things back on track. Of course Alex develops a crush on her and shenanigans ensue. It’s not exactly a complicated story but its charms lie in its simplicity and they still managed to throw in a little twist near the end too.
Not to give too much away but this is a typical feel good movie with a nice ending and a hilarious cast. The movie features some relatable situations mixed in with some rather over the top moments only a gamer would truly understand.
The bad guy gets what he deserves and the good guys always win – Don’t expect too much else.
Grandma’s Boy presents a questionable image of gamers in general though, making it seem that everyone to do with games or technology is a social failure/outcast or possesses some sort of social defect in one way or another.
As this was 2006 we can forgive this image because we all know that it’s completely untrue in every way. Gamers are normal people yo, we have no defects and we’re great in social environments.
As a side note – Jonah Hill is in this movie but he’s so fat that he looks like he’s about to explode like the Hindenburg. Like, if he exploded while filming this movie, absolutely nobody would have been surprised at all.
This was before he decided it was a good idea to lose weight or die painfully one night while masturbating on the toilet.
Considering how fat he was in this film and what he looks like now in 2016 – well done boy!
If you’re in the mood for a nice comedy to give a casual watch this coming weekend, check out Grandma’s Boy for more than a few laughs and more than a few ‘I’ve so done that’ moments.
If you’re a normal person who doesn’t much care for games though – I wouldn’t bother because you’re probably that person who goes to Matrix Warehouse looking for a Bluetooth Cable.
