In an alternate 1985 America, costumed superheroes are part of everyday life. When one of his former comrades is murdered, masked vigilante Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) uncovers a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his retired associates, only one of which has true powers, Rorschach glimpses a far-reaching conspiracy involving their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the world’s future.
In 2009, Zack Snyder decided it wasn’t enough that he murdered Greek History in the form of 300, bringing us Leonidas from the Scottish part of Greece – he needed to mess up 1985 too and what better way to do that than to take on a film filled with obscure DC characters from a 1986 comic book set in an alternate 1985 timeline?
Well the result was Watchmen which some critics called a piece of crap as soon as they saw the trailer.
The over the top violence, questionable characters and ‘forward, backward’ story style seemed a bit much for some. Other people loved it though and Watchmen went on to rake in a 7.6 on IMDB and a surprising 65% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It became one of the more successful films from 2009 and is today considered a cult classic.
I for one love this film and all the questions it raises about humanity, where we were, where we’re headed and what unites and divides us stay with you long after the film has ended.
The characters are great, the acting superb (usually) and I make it a point to watch it every now and then just for fun. Hell, I even tried to make my own Rorschach mask and failed miserably, it came out looking like a sock stained with a questionable substance – which might or might not be associated with Pikey in some way…anyway, moving on.
There’s just something about vigilante justice that remains appealing to the common soul and the unquestionable grey area the law sometimes provides for criminals to hide in is finely represented in this film which (for me) makes it a true gem.
The scene where Rorschach firmly buries a cleaver in the skull of a murderer remains satisfying to this day and you can’t tell me you didn’t think that guy didn’t get what he deserved!
At a runtime of 3 and a half hours though this film isn’t for the casual watcher and stepping out for a moment for a bathroom break without pausing can result in losing the plot entirely. If you’re in the mood for something serious based on a concept which wasn’t necessarily so serious to begin with mixed in with some action and vague philosophy and quantum physics – this one’s for you!
