Pawpaw Vir My Darling is a story filled with humor, pathos and razor-sharp social commentary on the life of a white (sic) Afrikaans family and their mongrel dog in a down-at-heel suburb. The central theme deals with their desperate, sometimes clumsy and strange attempts to adapt and survive the “post 1994” era. Included is the individual family members’ struggle to come to terms with themselves and their circumstances and maintain peace amongst each other, their neighbours and the authorities.Through the eyes of the Beeslaer family’s dog Tsjaka, one follows the struggle to adapt and accept the ever present hope of a better life.
What I thought
I didn’t really understand what was going on most of the time and seeing things from the dog’s perspective didn’t help either. I couldn’t really relate to the characters, the story was uninteresting and for a film based on a book I expected much more. White people in South Africa could not have been depicted more poorly than in this film and it’s my personal belief that this movie is what you’d get if you made a movie script strung together with banana peels and a loose plotline mixed in with random racial stereotypes.
That being said – the film is considered an ‘art film’ so it’s supposed to be a little weird. People who like that sort of thing will love this film and will enjoy it to no end. I have to admit it did have it’s funny moments and the movie kind of did remind me of the comment section on News 24…you know, before they closed it due to people being rude and stuff.
The DVD comes with some behind the scenes videos and a music video by Anton Goosen, though the retail price of R149 for this film is a little steep just for 2 special features. You’d have to be a real fan to buy it at that price. I’d recommend waiting this one out and checking for it in the bargain bin in a few months as you could probably pick it up in a 3 for R99 deal somewhere.
