According to sources, the Pokémon Live-Action movie rights are up for grabs and it’s started a bidding war between quite a few major production studios.
Currently Legendary Entertainment seems to be at the top with Warner Bros being in close second, Sony is also rumoured to be interested but it’s as yet unclear where exactly they rank in the current bidding war or if their even really involved.
The fact that Legendary is owned by a Chinese company called the Dailian Wanda Group could cause some tension though since it’s well known that the Japanese went ahead and banned all Chinese films from being released in Japan for the last 3 years, this mixed with obvious historical entanglements and rivalries between the two countries could cause some complications.
However in 2014, Legendary had some measure of success in China with the Godzilla film…so it does seem like things aren’t as bad as we’ve been lead to believe. Pokémon is after all enjoyed all across the globe by many different races in vastly varied age groups so perhaps Pokémon itself transcends differences?
I for one would love to see a live-action adaptation Pokémon as long as it doesn’t end up being white-washed and westernized like what happened with The Last Airbender – which was an absolute disaster as we well remember.
