What I Thought

Loyiso Gola takes us on a journey involving beetroot, the EFF, racism and a presidential office.

While not as explosively hilarious as some other local talent, Loyiso Gola makes a brilliant effort to bring his own flair to the standard old routine of making fun of politicians, celebrities and cultural differences. There are some jokes only South Africans will get and the fact that Loyiso Gola doesn’t have to ‘try to be funny’ helped me enjoy this show a lot more. I’ve found that some standup comedians tend to overcompensate for the lack of content by being overly silly with their expressions or movements. Loyiso Gola however – he just offers himself as he is, delivers the facts and hits you with the truth. It just so happens to be hilarious at the same time!

While the show does follow the standard formula, there are more than enough original elements present to make it his own (not an easy thing to do!). This is an undeniably South African show with some jokes only bordering on slightly offensive while others are all out offensive to a certain demographic. There’s a bit on Jesus that certain religious people might find more than a little offensive but if you ask me – if you can’t stomach someone making fun of your religion or religious deity of choice then why the hell are you watching standup comedy?

So what parts did I enjoy in particular? Well…the tuna sandwich bit, the black people rubbing their heads bit while tuning you nonsense and the beetroot were the highlights for me personally.

Conclusion

Overall this is a good purchase, coming in at about R115 on Takealot with a decent length (est 60mins). There’s also an extra tidbit present on the DVD involving a beetroot cartoon which was a nice little bonus.

If you’re not in the mood to buy, consider a rental since State Of The Nation is perfect for a Friday evening after a long day’s work for people looking to unwind and laugh at things that remain true but funny at the same time.
