What It’s About

Bullets fly on the Atlanta freeway as armed thieves make their getaway following a bank robbery in broad daylight. Unhappy with the results, ruthless gangster Irina Vlaslov orders the men to pull off another job. One member of the team is Marcus Belmont (Anthony Mackie), a crooked cop who gets saddled with Chris Allen (Casey Affleck), his new but incorruptible police partner. As Belmont and his cohorts lay the groundwork for the heist, they come up with a devious plan to use Allen as their pawn.

What I Thought

Written by Mark Cook & directed by John Hillcoat (Lawless) and featuring a star studded cast with the likes of Kate Winslet, Norman Reedus and Woody Harrelson taking the lead – sadly enough this film still manages to struggle through it’s entire 115 minute runtime. It’s visibly over encumbered and fails to offer anything truly original to a very weary audience.

Kate Winslet is perhaps the only bright spot worth mentioning in this film as her acting is superb and really showcases how she’s managed to grow as an actress over the years. The rest of the cast are really just more of the same with Woody being Woody and Norman Reedus being Darryl without a crossbow. In fact I kept wondering whether a crossbow would actually improve his character or not in the long run.

After the opening bank heist scene the film boils down to some well done yet pretty much pointless action and runs out of steam well before it manages to properly gain momentum in any particular direction. You feel like the film should have been done by now once you reach the 80min mark and spend the remaining time of pointless onscreen activity contemplating that joke Tyrion Lannister made in that one Game Of Thrones episode and whether it was actually funny or not. I’m not sure I got it, really…

Anyway – this is the type of film you’ll soon find showing on E-TV late on a Friday night alongside other cheesy action films which were long past their prime even before they were released. I swear if I have to turn on my TV and see Double Impact advertised as if it’s the best film in the world one more time I’m going to lose it.

Wait…what was I talking about? Oh. Uh…Triple 9. Right.

While the action is entertaining, fast paced and fun to watch – Triple 9 doesn’t offer audiences anything new and it all feels like some sort of work over of films we’ve seen by the hundreds long before Triple 9 ever came along. It’s great for a night of the proverbial ‘skop-skiet-en-donner’ but falls short of the finish line without even so much as trying to be a little more than it could have been. I quite frankly don’t even see this film having much of a cult following in later years.

All in all Triple 9 is a decent action movie and not much else.
