What It’s About

RISEN is the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of a non-believer. Clavius (Joseph Fiennes), a powerful Roman military tribune, and his aide, Lucius (Tom Felton), are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Jesus (Cliff Curtis) in the weeks following the crucifixion, in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem. Based on the story by Paul Aiello with a screenplay by Kevin Reynolds and Paul Aiello,RISEN is directed by Kevin Reynolds. The film is produced by Mickey Liddell, Patrick Aiello, and Pete Shilaimon, with Robert Huberman and Scott Holroyd serving as executive producers.

What I Thought

In this version of the story of the ‘resurrection’ we view the events through the eyes of a Roman and while it’s a mildly refreshing take it isn’t as if you don’t know how it all ends or what happened.

While not taking itself too seriously dimly sparkles as one of it’s strong points, it can be argued that films like these are a literal dime a dozen – catering to a religious demographic bent on believing whatever is placed in front of them without question.

Similarly to other films set in the era, it skillfully steps over and past the really big questions and instead delivers something less than fulfilling. Entertaining and fun overall, this is not the sort of film you’d want to take anyone except your church friends to see and I found myself wondering whether Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) shouldn’t have just told his superiors that he saw Jesus get on a donkey headed for Syria instead of putting us through the paces.
