The Dark Side of Good

DC New Supernatural Front Runners

DC may be trailing Marvel at the movies but when it comes to animation they rule supreme. Justice League Dark is the latest entry into their ever growing library. I may have extensive knowledge of the core DC characters but I concede that when it comes to their lesser known properties I am a bit in the dark.

While DC has been churning out animation for ages this is their first proper venture into the supernatural. It opens an entire new universe to fans. Don’s get me wrong we all love Batman and friends but sometimes it helps to spike the punch. Speaking of ol Brucie, he is the fans insight into this new world. At first I was weary as it seemed he was shoe horned in to simply market this lesser known property (and most likely was ) but thankfully it was done skillfully and he manages to fit in. Then again I actually think it is pretty difficult for Batman to be in something and it not work.

I

Constantine Lights up the Dark Knight

But Bats doesn’t hog the limelight, it is Constantine and believe me that is a good thing. Matt Ryan voicing the character only enhances this solid rendition of John. There are some elements that obviously couldn’t make this adaptation but it is not a loss as that leaves room to grow in the inevitable follow up.My personal favourite is Deadman, who serves as the comedic relief. Boston with his fan obsession over Batman tends to ground the movie with his humour without making it cartoonish and prevents the movie from taking itself too seriously. Zatanna is also there, pretty as ever and pretty powerful too. Another character DC seems to be hauling to the front line.

The movie is an excellent watch, and has a great story with some plot twists that may catch the uninitiated of guard. The animation is of the usual excellent quality we have come to expect from DC. My favourite parts where we see the magical combats. Still fresh from Dr.Strange I can see a lot of similarities.

Verdict

A refreshing new animation from DC that introduces you to their characters who are more rough around the edges. Striking animation helps to tell a cohesive story that makes you wonder why these producers are not in charge with the big screen adaptations. Grab some popcorn and see a Constantine movie that finally has the right actor and cast.

The possible result of lab experiment gone horribly wrong, a real life Anti-Hero with all of the sarcasm/attitude and non-of-the superpowers. Still tears up each time he sees Arnie lowered into the molten metal. Thinks he is super funny… others beg to differ.
