I have never been much of a Teen Titans fan, but I do love me some Dick. He is ( IMO ) the greatest sidekick ever. He is the one true Robin and his evolution to Nightwing is one of most organic character arcs. To understand how important this character is, let me draw your attention to a key scene ( Justice League 51 – New52) Dick asks Batman if he will ever join the JLA to which the Dark Knight responds with an emphatic, “No.” Robin hangs his head in shame as Bruce walks away. All seems lost until Bruce says, ”You’re going to lead it.”

This leaves old Dick jaws-to-the-floor flabbergasted. He is one of few that the Bat truly respects. I knew he was going to have a pivotal part in this movie as he is the founder.

Animation on the feature film isn’t the best. In fact, if we are being honest it’s very flat and boring, especially when compared to the last few releases. It doesn’t suit the style of the movie and more like a long episode of the series than an actual film. Even the style feels novice, with very soft colours used. It gives me the impression that this was rushed project, filler till the next Batman animation releases.

Even the dialogue feels dry and witless. Attempts at being contemporized fall flat and the interaction between characters feels wooden. Even Dick who is often the smart-ass of DC is left standing with egg on his face.

DC animation is primarily aimed at the mature audience, but this feels purely aimed at the kids. While there are a few adult themes, it lacks the serious tenor of other offerings by the studio.

After having my expectations built up with other movies in the stable, I found this entry to be a little lacklustre.

I suppose DC animation was bound to slip up sooner or later. It defiantly sooner… but maybe this dark cloud has silver lining… that better a Teen Titans movie tanks than any major entry into the movie library.

In short, if you like what DC normally delivers in terms of animated movies, you stay away, far, far away. A movie that falls short in every way possible and while there is a moment where there is a glimmer of hope, but even that is fleeting.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a light “something-to-watch” featuring these beloved characters, then this is just the thing for you.
