After many months of eager anticipation, the long awaited Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 finally hit the big screens. Nu Metro graciously invited me for an early screening for the movie. They also added a little cherry on the top and played it in their state of the art 4DX theatre. As you can deduce I was brimming with excitement as I have never before experienced a movie in 4DX .

The cinema was smaller than expected, but fitted with fully upgraded seating. The seats felt extremely comfortable and very Ego-normic ( you’ll get the hyphen later ). The experience is fitting for a movie like this as it really does take you into the movie. The first minute or two can be disorientating but once you get used to it, then the fun starts.

During the action sequences, there is a lot happening from the moving seats, squirts of water in your face ( yes really ) and scene matching the temperature. I highly recommend wearing a light hoodie when attending 4DX as it gets very cold at times.

The overall experience was fantastic! The only gripe I have ( and this is me being a little pedantic ) is that the seat movement didn’t fully sync to the movement on the screen. Maybe a little fine tuning is needed but otherwise, it a great way to spend an evening out with friends.

Now with that mini review of the 4DX experience itself out of the way, let’s talk about the movie!

Synopsis

We pick up with the Guardians as they have gained celebrity status in the Galaxy after their last hoorah. After a ferocious first scene battle they are quickly on the back foot thanks to Racoon’s sticky paws. All seems lost, until a stranger, aids in their escape. This stranger turns out to be Star-Lords estranged father named Ego ( See! Told you it will make sense!).

The Movie

Well, the movie is a wild roller-coaster ride filled with humour and heart. It is very different from anything else in Marvel’s stable. Usually, there is a healthy dose of humour blended with action and a pinch of drama. This time they have cranked up the humour dial to 11. Drax’s dry clueless humour is by far the best. His comedic timing is spot on (and more so when it’s not). Groot is the little guy that will melt your heart every time he has a scene.

There is plenty of action in the movie, which is augmented by the 4DX experience. It has everything from huge explosions to screen popping psychedelic CGI.

Most characters return from the original and have larger roles. This allows them to be more fleshed out. Their multiple plot threads as well as character arcs, which gives this movie a sense of depth, that was lacking in its predecessor. That being said, this latest entry into the franchise lacks the charm of the original- but then again that is something that can never be replicated.The first one took us by surprise, while this one had a high set bar to leap over. Does it make the leap? Yes, and it manages to stick a better landing too. Yep, the ending of the first movie felt very silly, especially when considering the stakes. This time around they go straight for our hearts. But, by far the best feature of this movie was the MCU continuity, or more precisely the lack of. While it still has a few nods, most of it is a story on its own. No shoe-horning, name dropping or any of that Marvel staple. This ironically added to the fluidity of the film. And last but certainly not least, hang in there for the after credits roll. There’s a few of them this time around.

Avid fans of all things Marvel will flock to the cinema to see this movie – that’s a bit of a no-brainer. For everyone else ( cough DCEU fans ) this is a fun movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously and in doing so manages to weave engaging and thoroughly entertaining special effects and comedy fest.

Judging by what I experienced in the 4DX screening, I am confident that it’s worth springing for the more expensive 3D or 4D ticket.
