What a paper cut really feels like

Dexter Morgan is your typical everyday blood splatter analyst who works for Miami Homicide by day and is a serial killer by night. As if that premise alone wasn’t entertainment at its best they up the ante by throwing in the fact that he only kills killers and him being trained by his dad ( a cop ) in the subtle art of murder. That alone would make it an award winning show right? But wait… There’s more! He knows he is a little strange and is on a quest to be more “human”.

Yup… all of that in one series. If that doesn’t grip you by the proverbial ‘nads I don’t know what will.

Who goes there?

In season 1 we are slowly introduced to Dexter as he tries to juggle a so-called “normal life” and his extra-curricular nocturnal activities. He seems to have a tight grip on this balance until the “ Ice Truck Killer ” drives into town. The new star in on Miami Boulevard leaves his victims in plain sight to be found by the boys in blue. Dexter is quickly obsessed with this new serial killer who cuts his victims into precise portions but not before draining every last drop of the blood and freezing them. Adding to the intrigue, the Ice Truck Killer seems to know Dexter’s secret and starts leaving him little clues.

But this isn’t just a typical crime mystery, over the season we see Dexter handle day to day relationships and how they evolve. We get a glimpse into the mind of a true psychopath and how they would deal with life’s daily dramas. We also find his adoptive sister Deb and how she anchors his otherwise chaotic but controlled personality. Another interesting relationship ( for the lack of) is Dexter’s subconscious/conscience which manifests itself as his late father. The dynamic between the father and the son result in some of the best dialogue I have seen in a while.

Packaged neatly in the always welcome 12-episode-per-season formula, the series is evenly paced and the story is always moving forwards. I actually prefer these shorter seasoned series as the budget is effectively doubled and therefore allows for a larger spectacle. Also, the story is always more cohesive. Larger seasons seem to drag the story unnecessarily with more than a few unnecessary plot threads thrown in and diluting the main narrative (here’s looking at you CW).

The series is beautifully crafted, with a strong supporting cast and even stronger lead. Michael C. Hall totally embodies the world’s most lovable serial killer. The season never falls short on twists and turns, keeping the viewer biting their nails, but even within this dark world, it finds the time and space to bring in small welcome doses of humour and even heart.

Dexter isn’t exactly the newest kid on the block but (IMO) it is still one of the best series available on ShowMax. If you aren’t familiar with the Dark Passenger, then it’s time to get out of that hefty bag and cut into this highly original thriller. While the series was and instant hit and had a huge following, most still don't know it based on a series of books starting with Darkly Dreaming Dexter.
