Video Game Features: Halloween Horror Game Special

Halloween is upon us and I thought what a great reason to talk about some of my five favorite horror games that I love to play. So without further delay let’s get started.

Resident Evil HD Played on PlayStation 4

I want to start with Resident Evil since it was the first horror game I ever played on the PlayStation 1 and it’s very close to my heart, I could not resist buying the HD remastered version and started to play it again but there was a few surprises. From the beginning it was obvious things were a little different, there are new zombies called crimson heads for instance and the map is larger. The difficulty has also been upped quite a bit and it’s more challenging. For those familiar with the original the corpse just of the dining room it does not hold spare ammunition anymore.

They did an excellent job of bringing the game to the next generation

The story revolves around a series of violent attacks near Raccoon city. You are part of a special ops team sent in to investigate a mansion on the outskirts of the city. The enemies you face are zombies, dogs, crows, bees, snakes and hunters to name a few. The characters you can choose to play are either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, each having their own different skill sets and scenarios.

One of the moments that made me think why does my character always get the small guns.

The crimson heads is a direct result of killing a zombie and not burning its corpse, this is a very interesting game mechanic that was added. They are faster and very lethal zombies, so remember burn those bodies quickly if however you get lucky and blow up the head of the zombie you have no worries. Some other minor items have changed position, but apart from that the game remains true to the original.

Your first zombie encounter.

The larger map ads a wooded area and some extended graveyard sequences. For the more daring player you can unlock a special difficulty mode. And for the novice the game has an added feature of defensive items that can help you escape an attack and stun the zombie, giving you enough time to either attack or run.

Slender: The Arrival Played on PlayStation 4

I got this just to see what the Slender series was all about as I have never played any of the previous titles. You play the role of Lauren visiting her friend Kate who has mysteriously gone missing. Each chapter gives you a set of objectives to complete before you can move on to the next.

As you progress through the game you are faced with a few abandoned areas like the house where the game starts, a forest and the mine. At the beginning you can walk about without having to worry too much about Slender man getting you. However as you go further you will need to have quick reactions as not too look at him when he appears or hope you can run away when he chases you.

It looks safe, until it gets dark.

His presence is made noticeable to the player by static on the camera, audio abnormalities and blurring, interestingly the option to pause the game does not work when it occurs. There are also a few other enemies that you need to watch out for. The most terrifying for me was the girl from chapter 3 that chases you and the only way to subdue her is to focus your flashlight on her.

Now who would go into the woods at night?

In total there are 8 chapters to play and is guaranteed to scare you quite a few times.

Timore: Inferno Played on PC

This was an Indie game I bought of Steam and it’s the 4th in the series. The story is about a little girl who loses her family when they are killed. The anger she feels remains in the house and in her dolls and no one who enters comes out alive.

Don’t make her angry.

Even thou it’s a short game it had some well-timed jump scares that surprises you when you least expect it. There are even some funny moments when you are asked “why is it looking at you?” and when you turn around there is an enormous eye behind you.

This is the only weapon you get.

Thou the graphics might keep some from playing this little Indy title, it’s a great game with some of the best scare tactics I have played in a while. This is also one of those games that you can get your friends to play just to record their reactions.

Get used to them popping up behind you.

Devilry Played on PC

This little gem is also an Indie game available on steam. You have to survive the night in your house while protecting your family from a sinister ghost.

Just pick one

As soon as you start the game you notice the difficulty settings in total there are 11 from easy all the way to enigma where you cant even see the ghost. You have a few tools at your disposal to help you defeat the spirit like candles, UV light, a camera and radio.

All trough the house not a creature was moving only a ghost.

There are also other tasks you need to remember, should you forget to check on your family frequently the children can get possessed.

Everything is quiet for now.

The radio will help you track the ghost but it’s not that easy, it takes a few attacks to weaken it to the point where you can kill it. If your heath does get low you can drink water to replenish it.

It is a very creepy game and knows how to build the right atmosphere to scare you into a new pair of pants.

The Evil Within Played on Xbox One

I bought this game solely because the cover art intrigued me, needless to say it has scared the living daylights out of me numerous times. You play as a veteran police detective Sebastian Castellanos with your colleagues Juli Kidman and Joseph Oda you confront Ruvik an invincible apparition.

The game starts with an investigation of a mass murder scene at Beacon Mental Hospital, you witness Ruvik murder three police officers. He appears behind you and knocks you unconscious, you awaken upside down surrounded by bodies hanging from the ceiling. With a short cinematic introducing you to the “Sadist” covered in blood and with chainsaw in hand, you need to free yourself and escape.

Sadist chasing you, he is relentless one wrong move and you are dead.

The game has some great stealth mechanics and you can even hide in lockers or under beds to avoid being captured. This builds up a lot of tension as the monsters seem to peek into the lockers causing you to hold your breath. Scattered through the levels are traps that you can dissemble to make ammunition for your weapons.

The eye alerts the player that there is an enemy nearby but you are still undetected.

The weapons you have access to include a knife, revolver, shotgun, sniper rifle, grenades and the Agony Crossbow. The crossbow can fire projectiles capable of either freezing, electrocuting, exploding or binding enemies. Thou the ammunition is very scarce it’s good to remember to look around and harvest parts early in the game.

As you continue the game you are shown flashbacks that tell you the story of how Ruvik came to be, with a tragic past where he lost his sister Laura to a fire set by men in an act of vengeance against their parents. His real name was Ruben a very intellectually gifted but at the same time mentally unstable child. Eventually he kills both his parents and takes control of their fortune. He makes donations to the Beacon Mental Hospital in exchange for test subjects.

Traveling to the safe house.

You have a safe house that is accessed during scripted events or either using mirrors. At the safe house you have a room for upgrading your skills using green gel you collect as you progress. You also get access to storage safes that contain ammunition or other useful items, the keys for these are located in Madonna statues hidden in the game.

Upgrading your abilities.

You end up being trapped in Ruvik’s mind and you are told by Dr Jimenez that Ruvik intends to escape to the real world by transferring his mind. I can say that it was one of the most intense psychological horror survival games I have played to date.

The final boss.
