We start our journey with the bros Axl, Lars and Ozzie enjoying a quiet day at home, the door swings open and Freddie emerges with a record. He places it on the player and immediately it’s obvious the bros are not fans of this type of music, but then he spins it the other way and we hear of a prophecy. They are teleported and the quest to rescue the long lost rock stars begin.

Freddie shows off the record he got in the bargain bin.

Game play

The game is a dungeon brawler focusing on co-op play both online and offline couch co-op. The game supports cross platform co-op, with Xbox One and Windows 10 players joining forces with Playstation 4, Mac and Steam players. The matchmaking system is very efficient and you can get into a lobby in 3 minutes or less. From there you get to choose your character, helmet and weapon layout.

Multiplayer mayhem.

There is a lot of fun to be had in co-op and even some actions that are sure to annoy your fellow dungeon crawlers. For starters you can pick up your fellow bros and either throw them off cliffs, or should you need a distraction throw them at the enemy. You can also stack on each other to inflict maximum damage or help you cross over larger gaps.

Getting ready to throw another player.

The game can also be played solo but it will not always be easy, as you progress through the dungeon in either solo or co-op the difficulty increases over time. This is because of the threat meter increases as you progress through the dungeon. To explain it better the meter serves as a game mechanic that motivates you to play quickly, failing to do so will result in hordes of enemies that can swarm the player in either solo mode or co-op ending your game earlier than expected.

Solo play with maximum threat.

After each level you are given the option to purchase weapon upgrades, this makes it easier to progress so remember to pick up all those gold coins. The upgrades reset as soon as you exit the level. You can also use shrines at the beginning of the game to either increase or decrease the difficulty of the game, this has a direct effect on how much points you earn.

This shrine reduces the damage enemies inflict on the players.

Characters

In total there are eight playable characters they include the four bros each with their own personality. Axl is the muscle of the group a real fight now type of guy, he does not ask any questions. Lars sees himself as the ladies’ man, with the hopes of marrying the queen of Chillheim. Ozzie is the mischievous one, using his knowledge to cause mayhem where he goes. Freddie is the one that always does something stupid, really not the smartest person.

The characters you will be playing with.

Now before our female readers get excited and say the developers did not give them the option to brawl through a dungeon with a character of the fairer sex. They are available as an extra purchase that will unlock the four fearless broettes. They include Jet who is a skilled assassin, Patti who is always positive and cannot be brought down, Nyx who follows the latest trends and Lita she has the voice of an angel but definitely the mind of a killer.

Weapons and Helmets and the Bro Shack

The game has four different types of weapons that include swords, hammers, crossbows, and wands. Each weapon gives you access to an ultimate attack of witch you only have 2 per world but can be replaced by buying refills mid-level from the shop in game. Swords give you the ability to execute the bronado, Increasing your movement speed and adding extra damage if you suck in your fellow bros. Hammers allow you to execute a brocano a powerful slam attack killing all enemies on screen. A crossbow gives your character and fellow bros a brief speed increase and double damage thanks to bromentum. The wands allow you to create a pool of healing that will restore health of any bro entering the circle.

Pick your favorite weapon.

You can unlock more swords, hammers, crossbows and wands in the bro shack using shards obtained from bosses and mini bosses, each having different attributes helping you to balance your party to be unstoppable.

The helmets give you the option to customize your character, these are also obtained in the bro shack using shards.

Helmets to customize your appearance.

The bro shack also allows you to purchase three other sound tracks if you want to hack and slash your way trough the game with some different tunes, they include dub-step, 80’s and heavy metal.

Worlds

There are three worlds available with the first being Cryptheim, a dark underground word ruled by Duke Spook’em your enemies are bonies and sorcerers. The second Chillheim is an icy world with a brewery built upon a geyser of brew. Ruled by the Brew Queen you will face her army of gnomes and her ice golem pet. The last world Bogheim is a beautiful jungle world but don’t let the beauty fool you, it’s filled with dangerous plants and animals. You will face the demonic frog-men and their leader known as The Toad.

In game shop to buy more lives and power ups.

Each world consists of five depths that you have to play trough, as you go deeper the game becomes more difficult. Halfway into the world you will encounter a mini boss that will reward you with shards when defeated and at the end of depth five the Boss will be waiting for you.

Even the mini boss can give you a hard time.

Each level is randomly generated at the start, meaning you won’t play the same level over. This however creates the problem that should one of your members disconnect and they cannot re-join a new player cannot jump in.

A fun duengeon crawler for all ages

Total - 8.5

The game is very enjoyable, however there are some issues that you simply cannot overlook. The first being that enemies can end up on top of your character impeding your ability to jump, when this happens its certain death 98% of the time. The second issue was frame rate drops that were experienced at times. To summarize if you are looking for a quick and fun game to enjoy with friends this is definitely one to play. Just don’t forget the number one rule namely BrosB4Foes always.

I'm 35 obsessed with anything gaming and technology related. Staying in a quiet town does have its drawbacks as we don't have the fastest internet, but that wont stop me from enjoying my passion for gaming. Just a quick shout out to my lovely wife who supports my dreams and my friends and all the crazy moments we have encountered in games.
