Gamers around the world woke up to breaking news this morning, PS4 can possibly emulate PS2 games! This means that PS4 might have 1,850 new games coming its way in 2016. Retro gamer enthusiasts, say goodbye to your social life and hello to your childhood.

Sony released this statement to Tech Radar in response to their query about the emulators existence: “We are working on utilising PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”

The fact that Sony has been developing an emulator is no secret. At the launch of PlayStation Now , Sony made it clear they wanted to bring their entire collection of past games onto their new console platform. It looks like we are finally seeing these plans roll out with the special edition of Star Wars Battlefront. The PS4 bundle comes along with the code for four downloadable titles: Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter .

If you boot up these games, you will be presented with the old PS2 logo in all its old school glory. Eurogamer reported that: “There was a system in place to emulate a PS2 memory card to save your spot in the games and a prompt at the start of the emulation that tells you that the select and start buttons can be accessed by pressing on the left and right of the DualShock 4’s trackpad.”

So we can deduce that we are looking at the first titles to receive backwards compatibility on PS4. If these titles were ports of the original games, there would be no need for those prompts or the memory card emulation. Another interesting tidbit to note is that the possible emulator upscaled the titles from their original resolution – 512 x 448 and 640 x 448 to the new resolution on the PS4 of 1292 x 896.

The PS2 had one of the largest collection of games of any console, which would mean if Sony carries on emulating games, PlayStation gamers are looking at seeing the amount of games available on PS4 go up to 1,850! Whether the games will only be available on digital download or if the system will allow us to reveal in our dusty PS2 disc collections is yet to be seen.

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting a wee bit excited about possibly jamming Crash Bandicoot again, smashing those crates and experiencing the Wrath of Cortex all over again!
