Is Allegiant the worst movie you could waste your money on this year? HELL YES it is!

PikeyZA and I decided to go watch Allegiant after we ended up booking wheelchair seats by mistake for Superman vs Batman. (Nu Metro – do you not think it’s a wee bit insensitive to call your disabled seating “special seats”?) Long story short, they wouldn’t let us into the movie so we had to choose another one to watch. We ended up deciding on the latest installment of Veronica Roth’s books because the first movie wasn’t that bad and we were unsure if Zoolander 2 was going to ruin my childhood memories and PikeyZA’s youth.

Never has a movie decision been regretted so much. Allegiant is going to sweep up all the Razzies in 2016. I will bet money on that.

The Plot

Let’s start with the confusion that is the plot of this movie. Beatrice, her bae and friends have toppled the regime of Jeanine. However, bae’s mother, Evelyn, is proving to be equal parts of bat shit crazy and a righteous b*tch. So they decide to do what teenagers around the world would decide to do: they sneak out and escape over the wall to find the mysterious people from the box. This is where shit starts to get wonky and all I was left with was SO MANY QUESTIONS .

Beatrice and the gang find the box people who are lead by the villainous David. He reveals that Chicago is part of an experiment and basically everyone is “damaged” and Beatrice has proven that a “pure” person can be born from these “damaged” individuals.

David makes a bunch of empty promises and eventually reveals his true intentions. However, these intentions just lead to more questions. If you aren’t trying to find Divergents, what are trying to do David? Why did you stand by and let Janine’s regime massacre them? And what do you need funding for??

Then comes in the children that they are kidnapping. Why are you killing the parents David? Where are you keeping the children? At the compound, or if not, how are you getting them into Chicago without everyone else realising there are a bunch of random new kids with no memories running around?

The cheese level was also in a league of its own. While Beatrice and the gang are running away over the wall, they stop to admire the fact that they “have made it.” And you guessed it, one of them dies right then and there. If you are still on a god damn wall and people are shooting at you, you have not made it Beatrice! FFS.

The “Acting”

Next, let’s discuss the acting. I love Shailene Woodly. I think she is a good actress, but my god it was a bit shocking in this film. She was only upstaged by David, played by Jeff Daniels, who got his shocked face impression from BiPauler Bear in our T-shirt Terrorist video . The resemblance was uncanny.

Then there is the CGI. Which I don’t understand how they managed to f*ck up so badly. Did everyone just give up on this movie? Were the cast and crew equally as bored with what was going on in this film? If you watch the extras in the background, the answer is a resounding yes.

What Others Are Saying

It’s also not just me that found this film torturous – Rotten Tomatoes has given it a 3/10. Christy Lemire sums it up best:

A nightmarish landscape that’s meant to be frightening – or at least unsettling – ends up being hilariously cheesy instead.

Peter Travers from the Rolling Stone has an answer for you if you are still considering watching this movie:

“Intrigued? Don’t be. You thought maybe the old caste system that divided the city into five factions (Erudite, Abnegation, Candor, Dauntless, Amity) died with Jeanine. Joke’s on you. David’s got his own system, which basically turns his new plan into the same old plan we had before with worse screenwriting, lousier acting, tortoise-pacing and way cheesier computer effects.”

The only thing that makes this worse is that there is already a sequel in the works for 2017. However, as with most things in life, there is a silver lining. The next movie got knocked back to June 2017 to make room for the upcoming reboot of Power Rangers in March 2017.
