The Breakdown

After years of mobile games, spin offs, toys and more, Angry Birds finally hits the big screen. Set on an island populated with birds, we encounter the iconic figure of the video game, Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), who gets sentenced to anger management classes due to his short temper. Red, who seems to hate everyone and everything, is teamed up with Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride) to control their issues. Through the madness of it all, the island of birds suddenly experiences an unexpected visitor in the form of a few green piggies (a la video game). Despite their good intentions, something about the mysterious pigs ruffles up Red’s feathers the wrong way.

Khanival Thinks That…

Let me first just put this out there. Believe it or not, this film is based on African history. Ok, I’m joking. But, I really think The Angry Birds Movie is riddled with themes of colonisation and genocide. You really can’t ignore it. The birds are enjoying their home on this island and all of a sudden these “pigs” show up, on what looks very much like a ship used by the early settlers. They then proceed to occupy the land and take away their eggs (children, wealth, future?) and then a war ensues between the two creatures.

Jokes aside, Rovio has come up with a delightful addition to its powerhouse franchise. Initially when I heard there would be an Angry Birds film, I didn’t jump for joy or rush to the cinema on opening weekend. As much as I’m a fan of the mobile game, I feel like this movie was long overdue, a few years too late, in fact. Thanks to the absolutely stellar voice cast and a clean, fun, humorous, colourful story, this has to probably be this year’s most underrated animation film. Filled with references to the various versions of the mobile game with all your favourite characters and many other pop culture head nods, this is very much a movie in the mould of the Shrek franchise.

Sideshow Attractions

DVD enthusiasts and fans of the franchise will feel a bit hard done by the special features available on the DVD, especially when you’d expect such a creative company as Rovio to give their core fan base a little more for their money. There’s a single bonus scene, a few trailers and an interesting concept art gallery from the early development stages of the film’s characters.

If you enjoy film scores and the production that goes into it, there’s a boat load dedicated to how the film’s composer Heitor Pereira put together the beautiful music pieces. One of the standout special features was the ability to sync it to the new Angry Birds Action! game available on iOS and Android. There are barcodes that one can hunt around for in the DVD and it unlocked a cute AR (augmented reality) feature with some of the characters, where I was able to take a few pictures with in the office.

Overall, The Angry Birds Movie experience was pretty entertaining. It’s definitely worth renting and/or buying on DVD, especially for those looking for great family fun and adventure.

If you're a fan of the games, you'll absolutely love all the references and easter eggs (punny!) that come with the DVD. There's enough humour, gags and pop culture winks in the movie to enjoy (on that Shrek level) if you're just looking for an easy-going animated movie experience.
