Yes, get ready to sing and dance and hug (even if it’s with your pillow) together with the Trolls. This movie, its music and these lovable creatures and, its music (yes, I say it again), will get you in the most incredible of moods. I had my reservations when I started seeing the early marketing campaigns for a movie based on the historic Troll dolls franchise. I could only think about who would want to see a movie about those little toys which I remember from the early, early ’90s, mostly swinging from people’s rear-view mirrors and keys.

But, Dreamworks Animations have gone and redesigned, re-purposed and marketed this one-time old fad for a whole new, younger generation. And it works! Boy, does it work! How do I know this? I’ve had to experience it myself, on the ground, through my little 4-year-old niece and 2-year-old nephew. It didn’t stop, all through last December, until January. Trolls… Trolls… Trolls. So I’m thoroughly prepared for this review.

The Breakdown

I’m going to keep this simple because there really isn’t much to it. The entire troll population escapes from an annual festival called Trollstice in a place called Bergen Town, where scary giant monsters called Bergens eat trolls. Twenty years later, where they have been living free from any Bergens, Trolls live happily and love singing, dancing, partying and most of all, hugging, which is scheduled hourly. Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick) hosts a huge party one day and invites everybody in the Troll village, including the very grumpy and pessimistic troll, Branch (Justin Timberlake) to join in the festivities. Branch hates all parties and singing, due to his paranoia that the Bergens will hear all the noise and find them. Which is eventually what happens. Poppy’s best friends get kidnapped by an evil Bergen and taken to Bergen Town and it’s up to Poppy and the very reluctant Branch to save the day.

Khanival Thinks That…

The story itself isn’t very exciting or original. I must admit, it’s pretty terrible. But clearly, they’ve marketed it for a much, much younger audience, hence why they also didn’t go the serious, thought-provoking Pixar route. But, where it lacks in story, it makes up with an impressive voice cast, with the likes of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel, Russell Brand, Kunal Nayyar and much more, who all seem to suit their characters perfectly.

And most of all, it’s about the music. The music really drives this film all the way through its very thin plot. With Justin Timberlake on board as executive music producer, there are some fantastic musical pieces with pop songs from the ’70s all the way through to today. Be warned though, it’s a highly infectious soundtrack, especially if you have younger siblings or children. It will be on repeat. It’s no surprise the theme song won a Grammy and was nominated for countless other awards.

Karaoke Mode – If you feel like singing along to all the amazing songs in the film, there’s an option to switch it on here in the subtitles.

Travel Through Troll Village – One of the movie’s characters, Cloud Guy, takes you through the village and gives you a behind the scenes look at some of the trolls’ homes.

The Potion For Stop Motion – This was the most interesting feature on the disc. Poppy loves scrapbooking, and throughout the film, there are a few scenarios of her work, in stop motion. An art department crew member in charge takes you through how she’s collected 1000s of different materials, cut them up and created the scenes in a gruelling process before being digitised and animated.

Creating Troll Magic – Another interesting piece of the magic of the animation process on Trolls, from concept art to the storyboarding, through to the digital phase where the renderings happen and how the scenes are created.

Dreamworks Animations Music Videos – A selection of songs from previous animated films from Shrek to Madagascar and more.

If you have younger siblings and young children, or if you’re young at heart and love musicals and animation, this DVD is a must buy and worth every cent you throw at it. It will keep you and many others entertained for hours. The special features add more to the experience as well, so you’re not just getting the movie you spent with your Troll money. Don’t be surprised when you download the soundtrack afterwards as well.
