Movie Review: Ghostbusters – I Ain’t Afraid Of No Ghosts

On the whole, the cast has good chemistry and are as believable in their roles as the ghosts that they are fighting onscreen. Each member of the team has a role to play but for me, at least, it was Kate McKinnon who stole the show with her theatrics and in one particular show stopping scene. The other notable cast member was Chris Hemsworth whose comedic timing was spot on. It was quite surprising seeing him in a comedic role after his more stoic turn as Thor in the Avengers movies.

I don’t think that the movie deserved the hate it was receiving before its release since regardless of the gender of the cast, the movie would have turned out the same. They don’t dwell on that aspect of the cast and as such regardless of whether the leads were male or female, it wouldn’t have made much of a difference since these actresses were, to me at least, quite funny in their roles. It was not a five star movie as it had its flaws with some of the jokes falling flat and the villain lacking much in terms of real motivation.

The question that needs asking at the end of the day is was the fuss really worth it? My answer is no. the movie turned out ok, it could have been better but then again Ghostbusters 2 wasn’t quite as good as the first movie either. The movie is neither excellent nor is it mediocre. It’s a good movie to watch and be entertained by which will be good enough for some.

Give the movie a shot and be entertained by it and remember to stay until the special scene that only real fans will appreciate.

When they witness an apparition and decide to post the video they had recorded of the incident online, those who have viewed it are sceptical of their claims and even ridicule them leading them and their rather odd friend Dr. Jillian Holtzman (Kate McKinnon) to establish the Department of Metaphysical Research where they aim to better research the paranormal and begin building equipment to detect, and catch ghosts when they encounter them. They hire an attractive guy, Kevin Beckman (Chris Hemsworth) – a rather daft and incompetent secretary to handle their day to day activities around the office and are contacted by Patty Tolan, the last member of the team, who calls them out to the subway where they discover a device that seems to be causing the ghosts to appear. From here on the movie starts to show the team as they struggle to be taken seriously when they warn the city officials of the impending disaster that is about to unfold. One To Watch!

The movie is not the trainsmash that many had predicted and with these lead actresses, the comedic elements of the movie actually work very well. The villain lacks motivation and some jokes fall flat but overall it's an entertaining popcorn movie.
