I remember way back when I was still a little heart stealer, I was kind of afraid of a game called Diablo II. I was about 7 when it released and I remember seeing it on a store shelf and being scared of what I saw on the box. So many demons and scary monsters! Of course today I listen to Black Metal and relish whenever I kill some hellish monstrosity in a game. Diablo 2 was a pinnacle of old school PC gaming and remains one of the strongest influencers to this day.
Many people have great memories playing the isometric dungeon crawler and some still play it to this day. Blizzard knows that and have decided to release a patch for a game that is the legal age of consent in human years. Their last patch was on the 27th of October 2011 which is around the same time I graduated high school.
Here’s their reasons:
This update focuses on system glitches introduced by modern operating systems. In related news, you can finally retire those old Mac PowerPCs. Included with the update is a shiny new installer for OSX.
We’ve also begun working to improve our cheat-detection and hack-prevention capabilities. There’s still work to be done, but we’re making improvements every day.
There is still a large Diablo II community around the world, and we thank you for continuing to play and slay with us. This journey starts by making Diablo II run on modern platforms, but it does not end there. See you in Sanctuary, adventurers.
It’s pretty great of Blizzard to make the game available to play on modern systems to allow people to relive some of their favourite memories or experience one of the best games to come out of the Golden Age of PC gaming.
