Video Game News: May’s Games With Gold Leaves A Little To Be Desired

Xbox had a fantastic month in April with its Games with Gold service. They delivered AAA games on both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 and it was generally a strong month from a value standpoint. They showed that they are able to compete with and even surpass Playstation’s Instant Game Collection with strong titles and great value for money. April was such a high that I was worried they won’t be able to follow it up and I guess my fears weren’t without merit.

The games that will be free for May 2016 are:

“Defense Grid 2”: Available from May 1-31 on Xbox One

“Costume Quest 2”: Available from May 16-June 15 on Xbox One

“Peggle”: Available from May 1-15 on Xbox 360

“GRID 2”: Available from May 16-31 on Xbox 360

Admittedly, the games aren’t terrible in the least. Defense Grid 2 is a very highly rated tower defense game, Costume Quest 2 is an RPG from Double Fine, Peggle is a classic and GRID 2 was a solid racing title. But there’s nothing that really stands out as exceptional this month. At first glance, there’s nothing that really makes you go “oooeee that’s pretty awesome”. A solid line-up, but nothing to make you want to run out and buy a Gold subscription. Maybe this is Sony’s chance to redeem themselves since a great line-up from them might give people a little more faith.
