Early Access was a strange experiment by Valve that had many degrees of success and astounding failures. The premise was simple: give gamers the opportunity to play a game as it’s being developed. However, not long after this, the system was abused by developers releasing completely broken and unfinished games and charging for it. While that’s crappy by itself, the developers also completely abandoned the games, leaving players in the dark.

However, there are some success stories. DayZ, Darkest Dungeon and BroForce being some of them. Not many games on Early Access see the light of day as full releases, but there still are some that do.

Starbound, basically Terraria in space, has been in Early Access since December 2013 and it now finally has a full release on the horizon.

The full release will include the complete story arc of the game, more varied generate planets, new dungeons and so called “microdungeons”. There will also be many improvements to the core game mechanics.

It’s been a long time, but it’s always good to see a game move out of the world of Early Access and come onto its own as a full release. There isn’t a definite release date, but it’s definitely coming soon.
