I was one of those kids that thought history was pointless. I mean, why do we have to learn about the past when we can focus on the future? But as I grew older, wiser and less edgy, I saw that history has so much to teach us. Besides that, it’s also incredibly interesting to see how humans of the past lived their lives. Admittedly, one period I’ve never learned was World War 1. I have a basic working knowledge, but I have no idea about the specifics of the Great War. That’s why I’m so excited for Battlefield 1 because it might give us a glimpse into this turbulent time.
However, EA are a bit concerned that the kids of today simply won’t know that World War 1 was a thing. I thought this was ridiculous initially, but then I remember that kids born in the year 2000 are now old enough to write shit poetry and learn how to drive. It’s a scary though.
“World War 1, we were worried that many of the younger consumers out there didn’t know that there was a World War 2 or Vietnam, so World War 1…” EA CFO Blake Jorgensen told investors at Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2016 Global Technology Conference. “I think what people don’t understand about World War 1 is the technology shift that went on during the war,” Jorgensen added. “People started the war on horseback and ended the war with airplanes and tanks and battleships and submarines. And that’s a huge opportunity for us to be able to do a video game around.”
The more I think about, the more I see how the concern is justified. While most know that there were massive wars in the past, it’s so far back that it almost fades from the public consciousness now. But I’m sure they have nothing to worry about considering the sheer amount of hype surrounding the game.
