Remember when the first Bridget Jones film was released back in 2001?
It was around this time that the word “slutty” had caught some immense traction, enabling actress Texas born Renée Zellweger to turn many a head with her portrayal of a female lead that sort of defied female perfectionism and was most pleasing when eating salty chips on the sofa or getting drunk and having sex with a stranger. When The Edge Of Reason came about, those who may have been around their teens when its predecessor was released where now ascending into their twenties, so by the time Bridget Jones Baby is released nationwide on Friday these now 30-something adults will be questioning whether a third instalment is really necessary, and if so is the term “sluttishness” still relevant in a world which has become increasingly charged-up to offence-taking and finally, is Bridget Jones the contemporary heroine we all need and want right now?
I think its aptly important to remember that Renée Zellweger earned an Oscar nomination for playing Bridget. We’ve learnt that Bridget is anything but a definitely not a self-righteous role model of any sorts because she’s excelled in simply being able to accept error as part of the human condition, aided with her ability to laugh at herself is what made us feel that she was in fact, just like us. Trying to hate the character Bridget Jones, is like trying to not to smirk upon realising you’ve just matched the winning lottery numbers.
Bridget Jones Baby, reunites Zellweger and Colin Firth, and adds Patrick Dempsey into the mix as the possible baby daddy. Also joining the reunion is Sharon Maguire who directed the first of the instalment. If the trailer is anything to go by, expect loads of smiles and witty British humour. Furthermore, expect to be reminded why Bridget Jones has become still a poignant female lead.
