There’s not enough action or Egyptian eye candy that’s able to mask the shortcomings of this re-boot. Whilst not totally unwatchable, it’s difficult to admit that the better part of this film is its stunts.
Searching for timeless artifacts, soldier Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) comes under attack in the Middle East. The battle ensues and accidentally a forsaken Egyptian Princess, Ahmanet is unearthed. Presumably resting under the sands of the desert for thousands of years, Nick is tasked to stop her whilst her super natural powers are continually growing. With London her target of furious abomination, Princess Ahmanet makes for an unforgiving threat. Strip away the digital-sleek looks and action sequences, there is little at the core of this film. The plot metaphorically drags on much like the sands through an hourglass and is mostly forgettable due to an underwhelming script. Using improvisation instead might have aided this film, as one has to wonder if an actual team of writers worked on anything at all. The supporting cast including Russell Crowe who plays Dr. Henry Jekyll, the leader of the operation appears unbaked. The characters offer very little engagement; it is perhaps the biggest downfall. Cruise, ads charm and machismo but his character is too stiff and seems weirdly out of place as a lead. At best The Mummy is a seriously average B-grade film and should be watched as one; alone where no one else can hear you cry about how Hollywood continues to undermine its audiences intellect through casual reboots.

Not his worst film, but even Tom Cruise should be concerned.

The plot is a mess, when the action halts - it grows increasingly difficult to watch. Not so sure a sequel could redeem this franchise either. Get it together Hollywood.
