Video Games Feature: Xbox Live Gold - Local Price Comparison

Update: I’ve updated the price table below to reflect some of the other retails, including TakeAlot and Prepaidgamer, for easy reference. Also note, as mentioned by commenter Michelle below, the Xbox Live Store function requires an active and working Credit or Debit card in order to work. Keep that in mind for if/when you decide which way you decide to go.

Original Article: So I was just sitting at work running some numbers through my head with regards to Xbox Live’s Gold Subscription and I figured out some alarming realities. Whereas in the past it was cheaper to go the grey import route as opposed to the full retail route, it turns out that the current exchange rate has pretty much destroyed both those options.

Keep in mind that this article isn’t meant to bash local retailers as I (and Geek Node) love to support local. I will just use this article to illustrate what you can end up paying for your Xbox Live Gold subscription if you want to save.

To set things up, we need to take into consideration that the Rand/Dollar exchange rate, at the time of writing, stands at R16,31 to the US Dollar. Next let’s take a look at what the various local retailers charge for Xbox Live Subscriptions.

Xbox Live Store – 1 Month – R50

Evopoints – 3 Months – R249

PrepaidGamer – 3 Month – R220

Xbox Live Store – 3 Months – R150 – On Auto-renew

These prices are subject to change at any time, even the Xbox Live Store price which I am arguing for.

You see the thing is, even at R100 or R144 more than the designated prices in the Xbox Live Store the Xbox Live Gold service is still fantastic value for money considering you get access to Multiplayer as well as at least 4 free games a month which if you work it out comes to about R4000 +/- at current RRP’s for games in South Africa.

I am not saying you should move away from your current model if you are happy with it. Instead, I am just bringing it to your attention that as it stands right now, it’s cheaper to purchase your Gold via Xbox Live at the moment. You can save up to R144 a month if you run an auto-renew option on your Xbox Live Account.

So what say you Xbox Nodians? Will you take advantage of this option? I know I have set this up. It’s well worth it in the long run, especially in this current economical client.
