Along with several other journalists from various other publications, I had the distinct pleasure of participating in one of South Africa and more specifically Joburg’s first Escape Rooms.

What’s that you say? You don’t know what an Escape Room is?

Well, it’s right there in the name. You’re locked in a themed room and you have to solve several puzzles, alongside fellow participants in order to make. The problem is, there is a time limit and if you don’t solve the puzzles in time, you lose. Simple as that.

I was joined by friend of the site, Darryl Linington, who I am sure you may recognise from IT News Africa, ITF Gaming as well as his fantastically put together Youtube Channel. Also with us was Deon Du Plessis and Nick Cowen from HyperText Africa as well as Kasia and Angie from Dark Carnival.

Unfortunately I am not allowed to divulge much about the Escape Room we played as the organisers at # hashtag escape would like to keep it a surprise, but you can check out a video below for an idea of what it’s all about.

I can say the one we played did NOT include a zombie, nor did we finish in 6 minutes as the Big Bang Theory characters did. What I can however say is that it was exciting, exhilarating and above all else CHALLENGING.

About # hashtag escape

# hashtag escape is a unique Escape Room experience based at 39 Grant Avenue, Norwood, Johannesburg. The venue currently consists of 2 themed Escape Rooms, 1 of which just launched officially on 13 April. The organisers build an create the rooms and puzzles themselves from items found locally and nothing is imported. The entire experience is engineered in such a way to feel as authentic as possible.

Price and no. of players: Each game can accommodate between 3 and 6 players with the cost running at R200 per person per game.

Players are REALLY locked into the room but the game is closely monitored by staff and there are microphones in the room so if you need to go the bathroom or need to leave for any reason whatsoever, they will let you out. Also, if you are unable to solve a puzzle, you will be given hints (but not answers) on the overhead monitor.

Now for the big news. We were testing out # hashtag escape for the sole purpose of letting you guys know what to expect at Geek Fest. Yes that’s right. We can confirm that # hashtag escape will have a couple of Escape Rooms at Geek Fest this year! I am not really able to divulge at this time what or how many but, I can definitely say that there will be a few games for you to enjoy and as mentioned above I highly recommend it.
