What’s It About?

Jason Bourne is the fifth entry into the Bourne series of films and continues its story 8 years after the events of The Bourne Ultimatum . Nicky Parsons ( Julia Stiles ), who we last saw at the end of the beforementioned film being sent into hiding by Bourne, reappears at what appears to a hacker’s conclave where she quickly gains access to top secret files relating to Operation Treadstone. The very same project which was responsible for Jason Bourne’s current predicament. She sets out to inform Bourne of this interesting turn of events but unfortunately the CIA has traced her and she is once again on the run, with the feds hot on her heels. She finds Bourne and informs him that Treadstone was

She finds Bourne and informs him that Treadstone was conceptualized by Bourne’s father, Richard Webb, who was assassinated by the CIA for objecting to them wanting to use his son in the programme and turning him in a killer. The movie follows Bourne and Parsons in their mission to bring those who killed his father to swift justice.

What Did I Think Of It?

Jason Bourne was a true return to form for the franchise, with Damon looking and feeling a lot more beefed up and dangerous looking than in previous outings. There are still glimpses of his boyish charm throughout the film, however. It was really nice to see returning character Nicky Parsons albeit for such a brief time in the film. I’ve always maintained that Julia Stiles is a really good actress and very underutilised in film today. Other notable additions to the cast are Tommy Lee Jones (Squee!) as Robert Dewey, the current director of the CIA and Alicia Vikander (The Future Lara Croft) as Heather Lee, the head of the CIA Cyber Ops Division.

The story pacing for Jason Bourne is fast and action packed with a very intelligent take on chase scenes which is a testimony to the excellent direction of Paul Greengrass. One of my favourites being the bike chase near the start of the film. Also well choreographed are the very, very excellent fight scenes which will leave you in awe of Matt Damon’s prowess, but while the action in this film is very good, Damon’s character himself feels a bit out of sorts when he is not involved in some action scene. In several instances, I felt like Bourne felt very lost and directionless, with the story only really gaining some direction when a new opportunity presented itself.

The introduction of modern day technology and focus of the usage of technology really places Jason Bourne in this new exciting world of cyber terrorism, privacy concerns and a new form of intelligence which really adds to the creepiness of the overarching story as well as by the subplot of the film.

The Jason Bourne series has been one of the standout action series of films since its initial outing in The Bourne Identity back in 2002. Matt Damon brought a certain boyish charm to the role of Jason Bourne which has always wanted me to come back for more. With each subsequent sequel to the Bourne Identity, more and more of the titular character's mysterious past was revealed (some of it good, some of it not so good) until eventually they felt that the story had come to some sort of close with The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). Then The Bourne Legacy (2012) came out, which frankly nobody expected and helmed by someone who was not Matt Damon. Ie. Jeremy Renner aka Hawkeye from The Avengers. I never saw Legacy, primarily because it wasn't truly a Bourne film without Matt Damon in it, but I was quite excited for Jason Bourne when I heard that Damon was returning to the franchise. Despite a few tiny issues, I think Jason Bourne is a good return to form for the series. With its well-executed action and chase sequences it would be most welcome to see another sequel in the series.
