If you’re into films that make you think, then you may or may not have heard of Denis Villeneuve’s instant sci-fi classic, Arrival. If not, then do yourself a solid favour and check out pfangirl’s review immediately . I, for one, was blown away by this film as it demonstrates that not all sci-fi films need be focused on aliens arriving and laying waste to mankind. We’re perfectly capable of doing it ourselves, thank you very much.

If you’ve seen Arrival and you plan to own this film on DVD, then I have some good news for you, as the disc contains some pretty decent special features. First and foremost you need to know that Arrival was nominated for a whopping 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and you’ll see why when you watch the film.

Whereas Arrival’s DVD offering does come with two great features, it still falls short of what the Blu-Ray offering brings. More on that later. But first, let’s take a look at those two features.

Xenolinguistics: Understanding Arrival. There is no doubt in my mind that Arrival was meant as a thinking man’s sci-fi, and this specific extra feature confirms it. They have put a tremendous amount of thought into not only the presentation of this film but also into the lore that surrounds it. It is distinctly mentioned that linguistics experts were brought in to add a realistic approach to how the alien language is interpreted as well as how our heroine approaches the aliens in terms of how she and her team communicates with them. You can clearly see the level of detail that was brought into the script as well as the production of this film.

Acoustic Signatures: Sound design. The team behind the film discusses the sound in the film, distinguishing it as a character on its own. You can clearly see that Arrival was meant to reach its audience at a visceral level, especially when it came to the sounds in the movie. While the visual are striking enough on its own merits, the audio introduced in the film drives the point home.

I’ll be honest and say I agree completely with pfangirl’s review on this film. It is without a doubt in my mind one of the best sci-fi films from the past decade and I am quite happy to own the DVD. I’m definitely going to be checking out the Blu-Ray, though. Without a doubt.

Arrival is simply sublime in its execution of the sci-fi genre. One of the best films in its class for the past decade. The DVD does contain some of the great extra features created for the film, but not all and this a slight drawback. The Blu-Ray is rather recommended if you prefer media with that extra bit of content.
