We missed out on the opportunity to review Don’t Breathe when it hit cinemas locally, but don’t fret. Thanks to the kind folks at Ster Kinekor Entertainment, we have the full review for you, right now.

From the creators of horror classic series, Evil Dead comes Don’t Breathe – a tension-filled thriller which will have you at the edge of your seat the whole way through. Fede Alvarez has put together a masterpiece of a film that has left horror and thriller critics the world over in awe, and this reviewer feels no different.

The story moves at a pace that leaves you breathless and you feel a genuine sense of fear and danger on behalf of the characters on the screen, despite the fact that they are no good criminals who just so happened to break into the wrong house. The criminals in question are played by Evil Dead star Jane Levy (as Rocky), Daniel Zovatto (as Money) and Dylan Minnette (as Alex). All three of which have their own reasons to be robbing from the wealthy homes in Detroit. Only Rocky, however, has any real character development in this film, which is a shame as can be seen in the deleted scenes on the DVD. Alex had a promising story going for him until the film’s scriptwriters decided to leave it on the cutting room floor.

The main part of the story plays out in a house located in a deserted neighbourhood of Detroit. No neighbours, nobody to hear you scream. The perfect setting for a murder spree. The house itself is an evolving character and as a set piece it serves a powerful role in driving the story forward, but not quite as much as the Blind Man himself, Stephen Lang (yes that guy who was in Avatar and also the guy who was meant to play Cable in Deadpool 2). Starting out as a would-be innocent that has suffered through countless losses in his life, including that of his daughter, the Blind Man has to deal with burglars as well, but things very quickly go wrong for the criminals. Very, very wrong.

The Blind Man is angry, and he has a secret to keep, so he sets out on his quest of finding the intruders and putting an end to them. For a blind man, he has surprising skill and prowess, turning his home into a weapon. Did I mention he is a military veteran?

The direction in this film is fantastic, with sound that drives the narrative, as much as the characters. The question begs to be asked though. What has we as a society become when we find movies like this entertaining though? The movie at its core is the story of a person, killing other people. Stylised to be entertaining to an audience. Don’t get me wrong, it’s done to very good effect, but have we become so sick that we find this entertaining? That I fear is an age old question, which I think will probably never be answered.

One of the biggest features of this DVD is the special features. The disc is simply jam-packed with extra content. They consist of the following:

As you can see, the value of this DVD far outstrips most DVDs releasing these days and that is very welcome in a world where extra content is almost exclusively kept for Blu-Ray releases. With content ranging from deleted scenes to director’s commentary from the director, co-writer as well as the main antagonist himself, Stephen Lang. You can’t go wrong with picking up this DVD.

Add to that not one, not two, but five featurettes, there is no lack of content to explore behind the scenes of this smash hit.

By contrast, the Blu-Ray has no additional content above and beyond what can be found on the DVD.

All in all, Don’t Breathe is a fantastic thriller that will leave any thriller or even horror fan quite sated, however the gratuitous violence is quite standard fare for similar films in the genre. It is however, very deserving of the praise it has received thusfar. I highly recommend this film for anyone looking for a good thriller to watch.
