Max Steel… Max Steel… for some reason the name had a familiar ring to it. All I needed was a slight jog of memory and it would gush back to me. It seemed so common and obvious. However, when I watched the trailer of the upcoming film starring Ben Winchell (no idea who this kid is) and Andy Garcia (whew! I know him) I realised that I had no clue who this character was meant be or what was going on in the trailer.

Some Googling ensued which led me to a Wikipedia page, which I found rather cryptic and confusing for some reason. It was only after seeing the images, that I realised what Max Steel really was. A range of toys released by Mattel in 1997. I recalled seeing the line-up of toys in Toys R Us as well as the adverts on TV. I remember wondering what the appeal was and ending up rather perplexed regarding the whole fad.

The range kicked off with military, adventure and sport versions of the character. These lines were later divided further into a rather confusing blend of action figures including; Extreme Sports Adventure, Urban Siege, Snake Island… and so on. A few other lines followed, each with their range of numerous Max Steel versions. Needless to say, there were a lot of versions of these moulded dudes lying in kids sandboxes and bedroom floors around the world. Each with a peculiar ability and unique fashion sense.

I digress too deeply into the realm of plastic for now. There was a lot more on offer by Mattel apart from the ginormous and extensive running toy line. A comic book series was put together that ultimately gave the character a backstory as well as moulded the estranged versions into a coherent plot. A TV series was then developed which was based off the content in the comics. The basic plot revolved around a 19-year-old Josh McGrath, who had super powers and could transform into the powerful Max Steel. Most of his adventures were espionage based and revolved around him stopping terrorists. After 3 seasons, the series was dropped.

What ensued was a long run of Max Steel movies, 9 to be exact, all the way from 2004 to 2012. The movies were limited to Latin America as this was the region with the largest sale figures. A game was also released for the Dreamcast way way back. It was however a bomb with rather desolate reviews… so lets not delve too much on it. A CGI-animated reboot of the series was made in 2013 and currently airs on Disney XD

19 years later and a live action film has been put together. The story follows elements of the comic books, where a character by the name Max McGrath finds an alien machine creature called Steel. When the two are symbiotically bonded, they form the superhero Max Steel. I have no idea what to expect from the upcoming film and judging from the trailer the film could possibly sway either way. But a new fresh superhero film is always welcomed by me. Unless it stinks like the Fantastic 4. Then it isn’t welcomed. No… it should just go away then…. Shoo! Shoo!
