I have always loved Robert Zemeckis’s films. From the Back to the Future series, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Contact, Forrest Gump and the list goes on… His films always adopt a sense of originality to them. From the story, characters to the filming styles he adopts, Zemeckis knows how to make a great film and he very rarely faults. The promise of a great film based on the combination of Brad Pitt in a Zemeckis film was only questioned by the boring premise of the plot and the bland film poster. I was however wrong for questioning the filmmaker.

The film pays homage to the old-school war films. There is a rich atmosphere created by Zemeckis that transports you directly into a forgotten world. There is a nod to a romantic era of the world’s history with an underhand hint to the dreamy age in filmmaking. It’s the shots in Casablanca during World War II, the clothing, the mannerisms of the characters, the slightest traces the film leaves that make you taste, smell and feel as if you are living in the 1940’s during World War II.

Allied has to be one of the most beautifully shot films I have ever seen. Every single shot looks like it belongs in a frame on a wall in a gallery. There were a lot of special effects bumped into the film to make it this gorgeous, but all of it is there to enhance the visuals instead of recreating it.

The performances by Bratt Pitt and Marion Cotillard is spellbinding. The film begins as a love story woven into an espionage film. The two characters play spies acting as a married couple planning to assassinate the German ambassador in Casablanca. The two fall in love, get married and move to London. It is here that the movie escalates and the tension experienced between the characters grows with every passing second until the finale. While the dialogue is great, it’s the simple gestures and expressions made by the actors that create the strong emotional undertone of the film.

I enjoyed every second of Allied. It is a great movie crafted with brilliant and experienced filmmaking. Watch this movie if you are looking for a great love story mixed with some amazing action thrills.
